Either one is good. I'd choose the X6 though if you're looking for AWD with higher clearance

The X-series of cars are pretty hideous. When it comes to SUVs, BMW doesn't even pop up in my mind as a potential.

can you tow a travel trailer with an M3? Different cars have different purposes. You have to determine what you need the vehicle to do. And only you can determine what actual needs you have. And... It's going to be YOUR car. If you're needing other people to tell you what car to like, you're pretty shallow.

the x6 is really ugly imo, and does not sell well in the US, although that may be good for resale, I'm not sure
if you can get a hitch you can tow, I've seen hitches for e36 and e46 m3's

Sure, put some jetskis on the back or a small u-haul, but I wouldn't want to think about the braking capability when you start adding real trailers. Not saying the OP needs to tow anything, but I am saying that people will definitely need to go bigger if they do this sort of thing regularly.

X6 3.5, then chip it out. Would probably wait for the 2010 X6 as its going to have more power and the new iDrive.

Totally different vehicles? If it were a primary car, I ever had to take passengers, or I'd be going offroad at all I'd pick the X6. If this were a secondary vehicle and I never needed rear seat room, the 335.
However, you're literally saying "SUV or car?" Uh... Toyota Highlander or Yaris?

Wouldn't 335 vs M3 be a more apt comparo? The X6 is in the M's price range.
At any rate, 335. I despise the X6. I don't know why BMW chose to copy the Pontiac Aztec...
