So... Any Jiu Jitsu guys in here?

I've been practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for almost two years now and was just wondering if anyone else here does too? It's easily my greatest addiction.

I'm a Blue Belt and love competing every chance I get. So do any of you guys train?

Yep, I do. It is indeed fun. I just wish I had more time to dedicate to it, and that the school I'm with had a school down by my university.

After I complete my blackbelt in BJJ, I'd love to go train in Krav Maga next.

Which academy do you train with? What Belt? I'm with Gracie Barra but I might be moving to McKinney soon.

Thats awesome! I can't wait to get to Purple, or I should say I can't wait until I'm good enough to deserve a purple belt - I' sure it'll be a while. Well, I just tore a ligament in my thumb in a competition this past weekend in Houston so it looks like this competition season may be shot for me but I don't think I can stay away from training for very long.

thanks! I know, I go to see a surgeon tomorrow so hopefully all will be well soon. Well, if you're ever in the Beaumont area and want to get some training in stop by the academy.

Just curious... I am a wrestler, but mess around with jiu jistsu every once and awhile. What is the criteria for getting a new belt? Winning tournaments, or just learning techniques?

Not every jiu jitsu practioners compete in tournaments, it's not a requirement. The ones that do compete use it as motivation to train better, compare with others, etc etc... To move up in belts it all depends on the acadamy criteria. Some require you memorize 250+ moves or some prepare you so you won't lose to a lower level class. It all depends on accademy, for example I've seen guys move to blue belt in 6 months but my school we have guys having more than 3 years still in white. Unless your BJ Penn don't expect to move up ranks so quickly average time to reach blackbelt 10 years, bj did it in 3.

+1. in any martial arts at that. I had a buddy that did kempo and it took him like 12 years to get to black belt. Not cuz hes a retard but thats just how long it took to get to that level. didnt Bruce Lee say belts are only good to keep your pants up?

Probably because there is such a variation of criteria in awarding the belts. Like what was said earlier, some schools move you up quickly while others are more stringent and really make you earn it to the full extent.

This is my favorite move to see when it is rarely executed

This is my favorite for defense

whats good?! i been training in the art of jiu jitsu - muay thai for about a month now.
i have two cousins that been training for about 6 months and after practicing, we go home and hit up the punching bag and spar. the first time i tried it they told me to kick and they saw that i was a natural at it so they brought me along when they train and from there i was easily hooked!
