Dammit - 3rd car opinion
So my third car (was going to be my bad weather car) is an '02 Saturn L300. Its not an awful car as far as third cars go. We've had it for 86k of thosse miles and while not stylish, it has served its purpose. My step son had been driving it for the past few years and it has 100k miles on it. Since my step son got his bio-dad to give him the '97 5 series (I am still waiting for that to backfire when his bio dad gets his feelings hurt - which happens often), the boy has said that he doesn't need the Saturn. We have been using it for errands around town and as I mentioned snow driving for me.
Last night the fuel pump died (not an HPFP ha! - omen of things to come?) Anyway, Pep boys is saying $800 to fix. The car is only worth $1500 in my estimation sold to Carmax and is costing us $65/month in liability insurance. I have no sentimental attachement to the car, but it is nice to have a third car to save miles on the other two and in case one is down for some reason. Here are my options as I see them: 1. Pop the $800 and keep. 2. Fix and sell (don't really think that this is a good one although the proceeds - if I am right - would pay for blizzaks). 3. Don't fix and donate to a charity - I itemize. Opinions?

Why did you get a bimmer in the first place? Enjoy DRIVING your car! How else will you get your full money's worth. Sell the beater and use the money towards maintenance costs instead. Save yourself the insurance fees as well (that's expensive for a used car; must be full coverage?).

get a private estimate
Find a local mechanic to fix it, I used to go to Pep boys but realized that a local mechnic was consistently about 30-40% cheaper labor. Recommendation, keep the car for trips to the mall, walmart, shady places...
Beater cars are awesome when you have a bmw... Also it's not what the car is worth but how much you can save in terms of miles on your bmw.. Also put the bmw as the secondary car on insurance to save even more. |

Get a second opinion, I think $800 sounds high. It's nice to have an old car for the snow (don't have one myself at the moment though). And agreed with the above - if it's a decent car otherwise, it's pays for itself in other ways. Saves miles on the BMW, nice to take to the mall and park anywhere, etc.
What's your second (first?) car if you don't mind me asking?

Fix it and keep the car as your beater. I have my '06 330i sport pkg (12k miles) and then drive a 97 Saturn SC2 to/from work and will use it when the snow flies. I could probably sell it and use the $ to buy new summer performance tires as well as a full winter setup but why put the miles on the BMW and why expose it to the elements? It may not be economical but in the long run, you may make it up in the sale of the BMW because of the condition it is still in and the lower miles.

Get on the Saturn forums and see if there is a DIY on how to fix it! Save $800 bucks and have the satisfaction of fixing it.

+1 for this. DIY before anything else. From the sounds of it you probably have a house and since it's a 3rd car just garage it while you fix it and enjoy the bimmer for a week. I live in an apartment so no garage so I can only do 1 day work since leaving anything out means it gets jacked.

A tax write off is only worth about 28% of the write off for cash in your pocket. Ie, they give you $1,000 write off, you are only getting $280 in your pocket.

3rd car is not exactly a bad idea either...less wear and tear on the bimmer...
My daily driver is an 07 Pathfinder and use the 335 e92 occasionally and mostly on the weekend. I wouldn't mind another beater to just tool around in but thats added insurance and maintainance costs. I guess do whats best for you.

There are other threads within the general forum that have even less to do with e90/e92's that I don't see you chirping about. This one has a direct impact on how much use my 335 gets/how I use it/and the use of my resources for snow tires or other.
