I'd love to buy a new home theater, but...
They keep changing the damn standards!! Now it's HDMI 1.3a/b/c. Already on the horizon is HDMI 1.4. And then there is DisplayPort 1.2!
This si a serious investment, and I do not plan on forever upgrading! Anyway, I just wanted to vent. |

best bet is piece together a system...As you said, it's an investment so don't skimp out and buy a generic HTIB that you will want to upgrade in a year or 2. I highly recommend picking up a good Denon receiver and then when it comes to speakers the sky is the limit.

How much are you willing to spend?
I actually feel it's a pretty good time to buy now since prices are coming down on BD players and HDMI switching recievers. Just invest more money into the speakers since you can use themfor years.

It's just like cars.
There's always going to be something newer and better... Funny that most people use their TV & HT system more than the car they drive, yet have difficulty spending a couple G's on the TV & HT system. |

No biggie. Current equipment can't even max out HDMI 1.3. Buy good/excellent speakers, and they'll last for a VERY long time. Buy a VERY good amp, it will last for a long time too. As for the pre/pro, buy something upgradeable, but don't break the bank. This is probably the last place I'm going to go high end (already have great speakers and amp). If you go w/ front projection, buy a great screen and a good projector. Projectors will get upgraded, screens can last a very very long time. After I have all of that would I worry about dropping serious coin (>$3000) on a pre/pro.

But dont get me started on the painting! The red wall came in pretty easily compared to the matte black ceiling. I think I did 3 or 4 coats for the red wall, but like 9 coats for the ceiling! I just kept on getting streaks! |

Dayum, somebody spent $15k on a home theater setup. ^^^^^^^ I spent about $3k for my Onkyo reciever and Polk surrounds plus 720p projector and 6" (horizontal) screen. Cheap, but it plays XBox360 like a champ.

darwin,
nice setup you got there! love the decor and the THX/Dolby/DTS signs. excellent choices on your components too. i also have a Onkyo receiver and SVS subs. i noticed you had a Buttkicker amp on your rack, where do you have the transducers mounted? are they mounted directly on your chairs? b |

the transducers are only mounted on the front two seats...and are always occupied by wife and I I was gonna install transducers on the riser for the back row but the SVS speaker is so close to it that it vibrates the back row anyways! I do have insulation inside that riser to prevent it from acting as a bass drum. Nice to see that there are bimmer owners here that are also into A/V |

yeah, i figured the transducers were only on the front seats since it would probably require more than 1 Buttkicker amp to power additional transducers for the back row.
SVS makes some awesome subs for a decent price. none of the subs from the big name speaker companies can touch SVS at their respective price points. i have a pair of PC12-NSDs that rattle the crap out of house so i dont have any need for tactile transducers. if your basement theater is sitting on concrete floors, that might be why you need the Buttkickers. my system is sitting on suspended hardwood floors (i dont have a dedicated home theater room) so my four subs provide ample kick-in-the-chest feeling. my other two subs are low-end 12 inchers that i set up to only provide mid-bass and i have them located directly behind my sofa to provide additional punch. i leave the heavy lifting bass to the pair of SVS subs which can go down to 17 hz in room. my next upgrade would definitely be a projection screen in a dedicated home theater room. im loving your sony setup! btw, i am also a member of the AVS forum. |

btw, i forgot to ask, how do you like the Buttkickers? i have never experienced them. i had done some reading on them and have gotten mixed reviews when used on concrete floors (without risers) because the vibrations are only coming through the chair so your feet never get any of the vibrations.

I dont have the buttkickers amped all the way up, plus I also have the frequency cut-off ON so they only provide vibrations during intense scenes. It's more gimmicky than an actual subwoofer. I cant comment on the concrete floors since I usually have my Berkline chairs leaned back when watching a movie.
and yeah.. i'm also a part of AVS. Best forum for AV! |
