Opinions needed: '09 R8 vs '10 911 C4S
Hey guys,
My father is looking to dump his '07 GT3 and pick up a new car soon, and he's down to a used '09 R8 and a new '10 911 C4S. He's a Porsche guy, but I've talked him into looking at the R8. Both have the same msrp, but Porsche is willing to take 15k off and give a damn good lease rate. Audi has implied they can't match that, but might have a bit of wiggle room. R8 has 5k miles, 6 speed and basic options (I think Nav and premium). C4S is loaded, including the new PDK tranny. What do you guys think? I've been pushing R8, but he seems to prefer the 911 because it's new, cheaper and it has a PDK. He's a bit nervous about the R8, buying a used high-end sports car, which I understand. And yes, these are the only two options he will consider. |

porsche bro. i'm not a porsche or an audi fan. but PDK sounds like some kind of automatic transmission. And I'd rather that when buying a car that price than risking it with someones used 6speed r8...
just cause someone can afford the r8 doesnt mean they can drive manual. porsche is cool anyway i guess if its loaded etc.. and cheaper so yea porsche |

I'm pretty sure his father can drive a manual, considering he was just driving an '07 GT3. But anyway, I would go with the C4S if I were him.

if i got a R8 it would be the V10 but the V8 still makes one bad ass cruiser. i would go with the p car since its a 2010 and brand new (yes im picky like that) plus they are taking 15k off

Thanks for the responses thus far. He actually hates the GT3 we have now. He put 3k miles on it in 3 years. He said he liked our 996 GT3 a lot more and pretty much never drove the 997. Said it was too loud and rough for daily driving, also would scrape on pretty much anything. I loved driving it, but he could never do it daily he said.

Well...here is what I think....
Well...I got a chance to drive a 2008 R8 on the track for a 25 minute session...with the 6spd...and it was very very nice. In California Porsches are a dime a dozen...I would get the R8 if I had the choice.
Here is a pic of it...

I would do the Porsche. I've been in both and the R8 V8 is boring

The R8 will attract a lot more attention than the porsche which will attract next to none. I would opt for the R8 if it was a weekend car though. its a badass cruiser
I would try to talk him into a 997 turbo though. amazing machines

No offense but I why did your dad bought a GT3 which is the rawest Porsche on the market right now? Going from it to a regular C4S would be like going from a Mustang to a Fiesta or Focus. Maybe his priorities changed but I don't know...it can be a very costly mistake to buy the wrong car and then trading it in quickly.

on another note, I can't understand why someone would drive an Audi R8 or porsche as a daily driver... I said in the Audi TT and hated the poor visibility... |

Uh.. His dad is a guy who does not like the "rawness" of the GT3 anymore, if ever. If a car in this equation was to lose on the trade in for not being what he wanted it would be the GT3. If he had tried to sell when he realized it was really not the car for him is how I read it. And the RS would fall into the rawest P on a showroom floor category. The C4S with PDK is a competently fast car with the option of a louder sound (if sport exhaust optioned) and all the creature comforts of the TT. Yes the TT would be nice but new he is looking at about 20-30 something more. Blistering speed does not seem to be a high priority for him. The C4S will hold it's own vs more cars than many may think. Sub 4 second 0-60 runs is in a league of many "super cars" being offered. I personally like the sleeper style the C4S carries. He would get the little back seats with the P while the R8 is very limited regarding space. With that said the R8 is said to be a really comfortable car. I doubt his dad could give a rats arse about people staring at one car more than the other. That is something the younger guys think about. I would think he is way past that stuff. Both are great cars but I would lean towards the new P with full warranty and peace of mind. 2008 Porsche 911 GT2 0-60 mph 3.3 Quarter mile 11.4 2008 Porsche 911 GT2 0-60 mph 3.6 Quarter mile 11.7 2008 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 0-60 mph 3.7 Quarter mile 12.0 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera 0-60 mph 4.1 Quarter mile 12.7 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera S 0-60 mph 3.8 Quarter mile 12.4 2010 Porsche 911 Carrera Turbo 0-60 mph 3.5 Last edited by gonzo; 04-02-2010 at 08:05 AM.. |

But who knows, maybe he wants a show stopper car. Its preference and something for him to decide. To say that he doesn't give a rats ass about looks is just as rash of a judgement as saying that he wants people to look at his car everywhere he goes.

I was not trying to aim at you personally.
All I meant was, in most cases, older guys are more settled on driving pleasure than eye candy. I think that is why the OP wants him to go for the Audi and it's flashier looks. I bet a nickle that since he is a Porsche guy, as said, it is going to be a tall hill for the OP to climb to get him to change. "Yeah son I will look at it" Later on. "Son how do you like my new C4S" |

R8 all the way. It wins hands down in the looks department compared to the P-car. I could care less if I saw a Porsche coming towards me, but a R8? Geez, that thing is gorgeous.

What R8 are we talking about, if it's the 4.2FSI then I would pick the C4S, but if the option was the 5.2FSI then it would have to be the R8 hands down. The R8v10 is no cheap man's Gallardo, it's an equal in every sense and in many ways a better car for a hell of a lot less money.
I'm a Porsche fan too but the sense of occasion you get for driving a supercar is like nothing else and is easily worth every penny extra and sadly the C4S doesn't give the same vibe in my book. |

No doubt the R8 is a looker.
What would be fun is this. Line up a track. Whomever in the 8 cylinder R8 and me in the PDK C4S. You would be looking at those gorgeous hips. For a minute anyway. I would gladly enjoy either of these vehicles. But for his dad I think the P is going to be in the garage. Footie. It is the 8 banger Audi being considered. |

Thanks for the responses thus far. He is leaning towards the C4S. I should have mentioned this earlier, but this car will be a daily driver, not a weekend warrior. I prefer the R8 for aesthetic reasons mostly, it's just damn gorgeous. Several of you mentioned a new Turbo, Porsche refused to negotiate price on new turbo coupes, and most of them are equipped in the 160k range, which is out of the price bracket. I agree with most of you that the R8 is something special, while the 911 is more commonplace (especially when coming from a GT3) and that's what attracted me to the R8. I'll let you all know how it pans out in the next couple days.
