So my gf and I are planning a trip and I'm planning to propose. I need to hide the engagement ring from her until proposal time. Issue: how do I get the ring past airport security while keeping the whole thing a secret from my gf?

My plan is to keep the ring in my wallet. This way my gf won't find it when going through the luggage and it will be with me at all times.

Do you think there will be any problem with this when going through security? I assume I'll be asked to put my wallet in the little bin which goes through the xray machine or whatever it is. Is this going to set off some kind of a flag or raise any questions from security?

Send it through in your wallet. Only the TSA people will see it and unless it is strapped to a car battery I think they'll let it slide.

Does you make your girl carry your bag?? Why not stick it in your own bag, instead of going through the hassle.

I also think the wallet is a pretty silly place to put it. Stick it in your carry on. One of the girls here at work just got engaged in Mexico and she said her BF was acting like a fucking weirdo up until the proposal. Just put it in your bag and try to act natural.

lol @ responses. Don't carry it in your wallet, I've heard a story of a friend of a friend who did that and lost the ring. Put it in your own carry-on and keep your girl out of there.

Just make sure she goes through security before you. That way if they do decide to search your carry bag she will be busy putting her shoes back on and stuff and won't see if they pull out the little box and open it quickly to look at the ring.

Wallet is a bad idea; put inside your bag (preferrably in another unassuming box, bag, etc.). IMO security is unlikely to say anything but definitely make sure your girl goes through first and is busy grabbing stuff. You could even try to intentionally delay the line by a couple seconds until she gets a little farther ahead ("forget" to take your belt off, "find" another quarter, etc.). Just act cool and you'll be fine.

Put it through on your carry-on... probobly the easiest thing to do.

Unless the ring is shaped like a bullet, or made of some type of ferrous metal, you should be good to go.

Might purposfully go through the adjacent line to see "who would win" or something corny like that.

You could probobly also slip it into your pocket. My wife goes through security with her platnium wedding band/ring on her hand all the time and it doesn't set off the detectors.
