Anyone catch the e-mail fraud special on Dateline last night?

The woman lost over $200,000 by sending money to a "Nigerian Diplomat" to claim her "$15 Million inheritance." Chris Hanson (yes the to catch a predator guy) did a hidden camera sting to catch the people running this fraud ring who had been taking money from this woman for over a year.

come on, are people still THAT gullible?? i would understand if the interwebs was new, but in 2010? people still fall for that shit?

Didn't see it. $200k though, damn. However I do understand that for a lot of people even an extremely rudimentary understanding of the internet/computers just doesn't exist. Like the time my mom kept saving all her powerpoints as the same name, and didn't get why there was only 1 when she was done. Or the time she installed a virus clicking one of those popups that says "your system is infected : click here" because "it looked like a real warning"

I get an email once a month saying my email address won a 1.5 million euro lottery. I just delete the thing.

I've never replied...but def didn't pay any CC for that amount...

My thoughts exactly.

I saw the special while flipping through the channels and it caught my attention. Dateline really tried to push the woman as the victim who did no wrong, but to be shoveling all that money at them is completely her own fault. Hate to sound like a hardass, but I have no sympathy.

That said, I was still entertained by the Nigerian guy in the hotel room and how clueless he was.

^Exactly, she was the victim of her own stupidity...my favorite part was the nigerian guy trying to blame her from trying to take money from the poverty riden country of Nigeria haha. Idiot. And then denied everything and said he didnt do anything, not thinking that everything he said was going to be on camera or recorded.......and he said all that after the cameras came out from the back!!!

I understand the whole computer illiteracy thing...I know a lot of people like that. Hell, my grandmas boyfriend (long story) is trying to start using computers........hes 95 years old...more power to him. But how can you really think that you can all of a sudden be an heir to $15 millions, and you find out via E-mail? She may not be good with computers, but she is also an idiot.

I wasn't surprised to see people still fall for that, after all the Project Managers (around 50-60 years old) are still having a hard time to adopt Oracle Time and Labor, purchasing air tickets online, or just general computer use. They are being paid 300k+ a year and clueless about computers.

And we just got an email from IT reminding us do not respond to email saying "your mail box is full" and asking for "domain name and user password".

Yup, it's no different in the medical field. Some very smart and very experienced doctors making close to (if not just over) 1 million a year are clueless when it comes to computers. They respond to spam, click ads, download every free app known to man, and generally break computers faster than anyone I've ever seen. And then try telling them it's their own fault - they don't like that much.

^I can attest to that. I work in the quality department of a big hospital in Chicago. Drs are so stuck in their ways. Some are better than others, luckily, my hospital doesn't have TOO many of THOSE drs haha

I have not gotten any of those emails in a long time, but last week I got one out of China.

I was thinking the Chinese are now copying the Nigerians and that is pretty sad. Then I was thinking, gee the Chinese are late to the game everyone knows better now... Well I guest not

Same as Hong Kong, I saw an email saying a banker from Hong Kong (HSBC or something, but with a bogus hotmail account) saying he needs to transfer the fund to US and I can take 5-10% for my "inconvience" some similar crap like that....

Agreed 100%...stupidity is to blame. Just reminded me of that...As many of you may have noticed I have somewhat of a wandering thought process
