stay with insurance company because 'you like them' or go to a cheaper carrier?
so here's the story: my girlfriend uses USAA for her insurance because she likes them. she says customer service is great, etc. blah blah blah. but she's paying around $1100/6 months for coverage on her 2005 acura TL. that's a ripoff and a half. it's that high because she drives like a pissed off teenager and has lots of tickets.
my rationale: i pulled quotes for her and found just about every carrier out there is cheaper than her current coverage with USAA. i think the lowest i found was $700 with her spicy driving record. i keep telling her to quit getting fucked backwards by paying so much extra when she could be saving money elsewhere, but she won't fucking listen. so what better way than to settle this on a car forum. poll is simple: ditch USAA for a cheaper, major carrier or stay loyal and keep getting raped. what would you do? seems like a pretty simple choice, but we all know how hardheaded and dumb women can be. |

I get raped, but have phenomenal coverage, and my friend is my agent so I never have any real issues when something comes up. If they are good and loyal to you, I'd stay. When that day comes when there is an accident and they decide that a car is $100 from total loss and you get fucked, you would regret the crappy carrier.

I'd switch to a Geico/Allstate/Statefarm in a heartbeat... unless you have some major hookup like Peanuto where you know you'll get taken care of.
When the shit hits the fan they will all screw you to an extent, that's just the way insurance works, everyone is always looking at their bottom line. If you look at it pragmatically a national carrier while not as "good" as a local agent/office is "good enough" 99% of the time (and far less expensive) for any kind of major incident. Either option is going to be lightyears better than some no-name discount insurance company though. |

I was in a similar situation and switched from Allstate to State Farm, then after State Farm pulled a bait and switch on me I dumped them for GEICO. I have no loyalty to an insurance company.

i don't either that's why i'm trying to show her that internets would even switch. insurance is insurance to me. as long as it's not jethro's car insurance and barbecue, it's all the same to me. state farm is pretty horrid for a big company though.

Yeah, State Farm quoted me a price, which I accepted. After one or two months, they called me to let me know they would have to raise my premiums because they made a mistake and typed my drivers license number in wrong, causing the underwriters to quote the wrong price. They tried to bump me from $80/month to $140/month. I said goodbye, switched to GEICO and have been back at $80/month for over a year now, with greater coverage than I had with State Farm.

My family and I have switched away from USAA a couple of times due to their prices. You (girlfriend) don't owe them anything.
Switch for a while then look at switching back when their pricing is more reasonable. |

For $400 savings, yes switch. That's nearly a 40% savings...at least I wouldn't think twice about doing that. I had Geico for years but never had to make a claim so can't comment on how they handle it, recently switched because my agent was able to cut my premium in half

I switched to Amica that I have never heard of from Geico because they saved me $1500 per year.

I just switched from Liberty Mutual to Geico.
Price was a $6 difference per month - so not a big deal. The major reason I switched... When I call Geico, I get a real person on the phone right away, 24/7. With Liberty Mutual I would have to call my agent (who was never available) and wait for him to get back to me.
