sup mates,

so im in my early twenties and still battleing with moderate acne, was wondering if anyone here tried accutane and if yes, experienced any major side effects. The side effects are mad crazy but this is my last resort to clear skin.......

I'd try finding another dermatologist that specializes in acne. Its generally a multi-focal approach to get rid of it because there are multiple factors which cause it. I'd try that before getting on acutane for sure.

Isn't Accutane found to have dangerous side effects? I thought there were law suits all over the place about it :

I believe the makers of accutane are presently looking at a class action lawsuite for people who have had very bad side effects. I'd steer clear.

I used it in high school. I had the worst kind you can get in cysts and accutane cleared it up for good (I dont get the big ones anymore). Granted I still get acne here and there, but no where near the level I used to experience before.

The only side effects I experienced was that my lips would dry out all the time....even now. I can't go anywhere without chapstick now.

I took accutane when in high school.

Make sure you find yourself a reputable dermatologist...

I took it for about 6 months (completely cleared up acne); each month I went in for a blood test to ensure my organs (especially my liver) were not adversely being affected. You will also have to eat healthy (no fried foods and what not).

All I got was very dry skin....as well as dry lips. No depression/hair loss/loss of sight...or any other side effects they mention.

You will also have to ensure you have stopped growing....I had to go get xrays to ensure the growth plate (its in your hand) had completely closed (i forgot the technical term for it...its been awhile...lol) before I could start taking it. If you have not stopped growing, acctuane can stunt your growth.

I forget what this drug was originally used for when the found out by accident it clear acme, it is now use more for acme then anything else.

I took it and as above, my doctors had me take blood test all the time and had me coming in and see him weekly for the first few weeks to make sure I was not having bad side effects. I was not on for more than 6 months either, it cleared all my problems. The reason I got it was due to the fact I was getting acme cysts on my face, chest and back and regular acme treatments do not work. If you have just normal acme of good Dr will most likely not put you on this, due to the down sides.

The dry skin sucks, since I am dark skinned and use to have nice skin, but my skin flaked all the time while on the drug. The other thing you have to worry about is staying out of the sun while on the drug. Lucky for me I did my 6 months during the winter so it was easy to stay covered up. But some 15 yrs later I had not ill affects like all the people are saying happen to them after being on the drug. I only thing I can say is I do not tan as easily anymore, tend to get burned if I am not careful, unlike before I would tan up right away.

Obviously my Dr took lots of precautions, however, I hear of people getting this just for normal acme problems and did not do all the blood analysis I got so there are some bad Dr's out there doing things they should not be.

Hell my Dr asked if my wife and I plan to have kids while I was on the drug, he advise to wait and not put her at risk, he even said she should not touch the pills.

I really don't see how these law suits are going to work... You have to sign so many forms before you can even take this shit and you are clearly told all the risks before taking it as well. I had to jump through fucking hoops to get accutane.

@OP - I've done it and a cousin of mine has too. She didn't have any side effects that I know of other than dry skin. My skin was constantly dry (moisturizers didn't help), I was sweating like crazy (but I sweat a lot so it might not have been the accutane) and my hair really thinned out. The only major long-lasting side effect I'm having (almost 2 years after accutane) is my hair not being as thick as it used to and I'm actually starting to lose a lot of hair... It sucks, but it's totally worth being acne free IMO.

And I almost forgot. My night vision really suffered when I was taking Accutane. It's back to normal now, but driving at night was quite a task for me when I was on it.

I see commercials all the time for lawyers and law offices advertising themselves for former accutane users. Some of the side effects don't sound too enjoyable.. Just try benzoyl peroxide face wash and lotion (10% is the strongest) with non-oily moisturizers twice a day

If the OP is considering Accutane, then I'm pretty sure he's tried this stuff. I battled Acne for 2 years with multiple antibiotics, creams and washes and nothing helped.

i took it in my late teens and i dont regret it one bit, it cleared up my acne completely and the only side effect i had was really chapped lips. as long as your being monitored by a doc while on it, youll b fine and you wont regret it. i was on it for 6 months and that was about 6 years ago.

the only time i get any kind of breakout now is from shaving and thats more skin irritation than anything.

DUDE! i have the same issue .........cysts that would swell up and it hella hurts, the nasty part is that theres hella pus and an immense amount of blood. ive been going to the same doctor since high school and hes been telling me that "oh, it will go away in time" but it just seems to get worser by the months.....im going to give this new derm a try today, supposedly hes the best. Your reply was very helpful, thanks man.

Yeah, I had the same issue too. Huge cysts on my face, back, etc. I have very sensitive skin so Proactive and other facial cleansers do not work. They dry up my skin and I would break out some more. I went to the dermatologist and he gave me some antibiotics for about month. Didn't do anything. He told me my last resort would be Accutane. Took 1 pill a day for the first 3 months. Saw results right away. Then we upped it to 2 a day and my face was cleared by the 4th month. As long as you keep going in every month for blood tests and check ups, I think you will be fine.

find a competent dermatologist...no one should have to suffer with acne...it is completely treatable...

and to the fools that say the lawsuits are there for a reason...you are correct...they are there to make plaintiffs attorneys very wealthy...these are safe and reasonable medications...for informed adults under appropriate medical supervision...

The warning labels are there for a reason too. I fail to see how Accutane should be at fault for any of these lawsuits when they clearly make you jump through hoops just to get this damn drug. I'm surprised they aren't making males takes fucking pregnancy tests.

You have to sign about 3 or 4 forms and initial another 2 that ALL clearly explain the side effects.
You have to get monthly blood tests.
You have to visit your dermatologist every 3 weeks.
AND you have to carry your iPledge card with you to the Pharmacy before they can even release the drug to you.

dry chapped lips while on Accutane. But dealing w/ that was well worth not dealing w/ acne again. Go for it, and make sure you keep chapstick in your possession at all times. You're gonna need it. Good luck!
