Porsche Brings Back the 911 Speedster

http://www.kilometermagazine.com/art...Speedster.html

Porsche's big Paris surprise is out of the bag. The 911 Speedster will debut next week. No real explanation is needed, but here are the details. Based on the 997, the Speedster features a more raked windshield that is lower by 60 mm, and the requisite low-brow manual folding softtop for a roof. A two-seater, the 911 Speedster wears the signature double-bubble rear cowls reminiscent of the original 356 Speedster.

Power will come from the 3.8-liter naturally aspirated flat-six pumping 408 hp (DIN) to the rear axle through a seven-speed PDK gearbox. Limited-slip will be standard, as will Porsche's ceramic brake system.

A creation of the Porsche Exclusive division, the Speedster will feature an extensive list of features commonly found on the options list. Smooth black leather will find its way on nearly every surface inside except for the seat inserts, which will be rendered in checkerboard cloth. The signature color is Pure Blue, as shown, but Carrera White will also be available as an option.

The 911 Speedster will sell in Germany for €201,682 (including 19% VAT) when it becomes available in December of this year. No word yet on whether the 911 Speedster will make it to the States, but with only 356 examples slated to be built, we're guessing not. Too bad considering the original 356 Speedster was created specifically for the North American market by then importer Max Hoffman. If the Boxster Spyder is any indication, we'd say America is ready for a stripped-down, open-top 911. Bring it on.
While I like the concept, IMO the execution is not there - to me this comes off as an under-thought excuse to make yet another 911 variant and somewhat cheesy

I read about this car a while back in Excellence, this and the Sport Classic are just Porshce's way of showing off what their 'Exclusive' shop can do.

Windshield is too tall for that speedster look.

LOL, their model lineup of 2 cars. Seriously, they have the Boxster, and then 50 variations of the 911. Their model lineup is a 911 playing dress up.

Don't see why it would handle any worse than the existing 911 Cabrio variants...

Is porsche having problems turning aprofit?

THis is typical MBA's remarketing, fine tweaking existing models and technology, packaging it as something unique etc and charging more for it

First the Carreara GTS, and now the Speedster

Its BS.

A slightly modified 911 does no justice to the Porsche Speedster name. Nothing should share the same name as this, the original:

A Speedster 911. Because the regular 911 is such a slouch.

Not sure I agree with that statement. Wait, no I don't.

But, if they are going to make one they should make it in the spirit of the orig. remove content, make it lighter and cheaper, that is why the made the Speedster to begin with.

20 variants is too much... takes away from the 911 mystique and cheapens the brand.

Regardless, I will still own one someday!

Good points there. I retract what I said about never bringing it back

Does this car have the same engine as the 911 GTS?

I'm really not a fan of this car's styling, nor am I fan of the old school cup wheels on this and the GTS, either.

As for all of the 911 models, I really don't care how many Porsche keeps cranking out. In fact, I rather like the variety. As long as they keep making the GT3, I'll be a happy man.
