WTF is wrong with my internet connection? Help

Hey everyone, lately out of nowhere my internet will go from fast to extremely slow and or non existent. This will happen for 5 minutes then slowly get faster and then happen again. I am with Time Warner cable and the modem hooks up to a router.

A technician came over and said I need a new router and that is whats causing the problem. Does this sound right? I just want to make sure it is before I shell out $60 for a new one.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would try to rule out the router by hooking directly up to the modem and seeing if you can replicate the issue

It could be the router, but like Kyle said, plug your computer straight into the modem and see if the problem still exists. I had an issue where the internet would just completely shut off and I would have to go unplug the router and modem to restart them. I hooked up a spare router I had and haven't had any issues since. So I think the old router just went bad or something.

Your first problem is you are with Time Warner. They suck I had them for a year in woodland hills and they sucked major butt. i am with charter now and they suck major penis. So really it is up to you, do want one that sucks butt, or penis? I am waiting for Verizon Fios fiber optic. they are currently only in Thoudans oaks, and Malibu. AT&T is awesul to. My girlfriend has them. None of the current cable companies offer consistant service. Stay away from AT&T at all cost. They charge for everything.

Before you buy anything test with a cable directly into the cable modem as suggested. You might also want to change the channel on the wireless router you currently have. If you live in an apartment/condo complex there is a chance that you might be getting some interference with other tenants who are running on the same channel you are which has the potential for you to loose connectivity.

If the problem is in fact your router and you decide that a replacement is your only option, be sure to read reviews of routers before you just go out and buy one since all are not created equal.

Sadly the issues you claim to have are the most common and usually due to cheap/inferior chipsets that some these companies are using in the ~$50 price-point offerings.

I actually had to replace my 1 month old Belkin router due to the connection dropping off 3-4 times a day. If I had done my homework, I would have read that lots of people are having these issues with that particular model... so read up and you'll save some time and money in the long run.

FWIW, here is what I'm running currently running, and it hasn't missed a beat since I installed it.

3x the price, but arguably 3x the wireless performance of it's predecessor.

if its not your router, it might be your sway bar. not sure tho...do you have any access to medical records?

just kidding.

this should be IT 101. you can rectify the situation by purchasing new router but you could also have a virus maybe?

If it's working when it's hardwired to the router, then it isn't your service, it's the router (to some degree). Just because the wireless signal isn't working the greatest, doesn't necessarily mean that getting a new router will solve your problems. Go into the settings and check on the channel that you are broadcasting on. As I mentioned in my previous post sometimes you can get some interference if your neighbors are broadcasting on the same channel as you are. This is especially prevalent in highly populated areas (apartment/condo complexes) where everyone just plugs in their router and hits "go" with all the default settings. This will inevitably cause packet loss, and make your internet connection either really slow, or in some cases non-existant. Also the weaker your signal is, the more probability that you are experiencing packet loss and the more any channel interference will be exacerbated.

If you have a full wireless signal >90% and are still having issues, check the channel as I mentioned. If you still are having issues after switching the channel around a couple times, then you need a new router.

Here is the issue with the hardware that I was speaking about earlier... this could also be a bit of your problem.

The chipsets that are the crappy ones I spoke of do work... but they don't work for all things. When we were having our issues, my HP printer and our iphones would connect fine (and seemingly hold their connections), but my Macbook Pro and my wife's Macbook Air would drop off every so often.

My PC desktop would hold the connection better than my Macbook, but it would still get bounced from time to time. Basically windows would just pop-up that my wireless connection had "limited or no connectivity".

After lots of research, the underlying issue was that the chipset on my Belkin router wasn't compatible with all of the wireless cards that were connecting to it... therefore it was kicking them off from time to time.

Our new Netgear router has completely cured our connectivity issues.

My last router was a little flat black Cisco. Works well. Had to reset it maybe twice in the past year. I stream everything from music do bluray videos with it around the apt. and have zero problems.

I had a netgear back at the parents house and it works pretty well. No problems. '

Linksys..... I was always resetting that thing. It just sucked.
