2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe will get 429hp 5.0-liter V8 and eight-speed transmission
Hyundai is on the move! I am very impressed with their progress! I can't wait to test drive this coupe when available. 429hp V8 in this pretty coupe? Damn..

This is an 8 month old article and we haven't heard any news recently except this...
"When we asked if the Genesis Coupe would get the new V6, he said "you won't see any difference to the Genesis Coupe powertrain for a little while." Trainor wouldn't define what "a little while" meant, but he did say "you'll probably see a similar strategy to the Genesis sedan," suggesting that the Coupe will get a power bump when it gets facelifted, "probably next year."" |

I don't believe the two sedans will be the only vehicles in the line up with this motor.. Hyundai knows their is a market out there for V8 sport coupes..

Oh man. I was just at the auto show and saw the new R spec sedan and thought that if this engine were put in the coupe, it would really shake up the segment.
The V6 engine now gets 333hp and 29mpg on the highway with direct injection. |

"R Spec" should be Hyundai's new performance arm. The 429hp sedan is creating a buzz already.
Are you listening Hyundai

Holy shit. I really can't believe that Hyundai would give the Genesis a 430hp V8.
Seeing as the 2.0 and 3.6 coupes have a curb weight of around 3300-3400lbs, I'd assume the V8 version would come in around 3600lbs. With a bigger engine typically comes bigger brakes, bigger wheels/tires, etc. Weight distribution might be the one thing to hold it back. It might have around 55% of the weight over its nose. This will be a perfect competitor to the 5.0. Hell, it'll have a good shot of beating it.

I'd love to see a V8 in that car. Definitely would be mustang competition, but I bet it'd be around the same price point too, which is a lot for a Hyundai.

Just looked up the engine info, and the 3.8 already has an aluminum block (and heads) and has a weight distribution 55/45. So, it would be a big hurdle to accomodate a larger engine. Perhaps that's why the sedan can get away with using that V8.

That is pretty impressive for a Hyundai. I am looking forward to seeing what the final version looks like, I may have to get one to run errands in. So on a side note they are stepping up from the V6 on their cars while we are stepping back to a TT I6 on our M3s

Very very impressive, and Hyundai seems to be impressing me more and more lately. I just hope they can keep the PRICE reasonable.
EDIT: Although I think 8 gears is too many. EDIT 2: Um, guys? Anyone else notice that the date that article was posted was way back in June of last year?!?!?! |

300bhp was the absolute pinnacle for entry level luxury cars less than four years ago...why would they be in the 400bhp range now? I think this Genesis Coupe "R" will be a low volume model, allowing Hyundai some leeway in terms of CAFE standards and fleet averages.
