Best sedan under $40k? new or used
So I am looking for a second car.
Only requirements is to be a sedan, under $40k and decent mpg (not a prius, but not M5 mpg). Being under a current warranty would be nice, but not 100% necessary. New or Used. Any ideas? I have seen some clean used IS-F's under $40k. |

IS-F would be a great buy. There are quite a few on autotrader for ≤ $40k.
Really though, I think an E90 335i is an amazing all-round sedan that you'll enjoy. $40k is a perfect budget to find one with reasonable miles. Perfect amount of power for a DD, great fuel efficiency, solid driving dynamics; you can't go wrong. I'd find a used E90 335i for 35k and dump the other 5k into some wheels and light cosmetic mods if I was you.

Eh, 65k miles on a car that's five years old that gets around mid-teens mpg combined with dated looks and technology. Not my cup of tea but it is a steal for the power you get.

everything i've read online including reviews says you can realistically expect low teens with regular driving habits.

Always loved the Quattroporte, but like you said the shop bills could be rough. |

RS4 is nice, IS-F would be nice as well. Probably in a year or so you'll start getting some C63's down around that price, but I don't know if you'll find any now, hell of a car though.
Just looking around as well, there were a couple CTS-V's that were hovering around 40k on eBay. Again, beastly car. |

How about a 335d?
Also "best" is a very vague descriptor. Are you looking for a sports sedan only, or are less sporty options ok as well? RS4 will certainly get crap MPG, but I have ridden in one and it sounds awesome and has a great interior (not so great at auto-X though). I am not sure if the newest CTS-V's are down that low yet, but it's another good option. For less-sporty, you have the Genesis V8, a used 2011 M37/56, ...

What about a used C63 AMG? Or better, what about another M3? M3 sedan ? I think the M3 sedan would eventually become extinct after the current one so get hold of it before someone else does

Used C63. You hypothetically can get 20 mpg out of it. Plus, it would be a nice complement to your M.

I think the g37 deserves a mention here. You can get a a fully loaded one for 40k. While it is not my favorite and I prefer some of the cars previously mentioned, there is something about new vs used that makes it appealing.
