What would you do for a second car?
I returned my leased MB R-class yesterday so I just have the m3 now. I used the r-class for winter driving when we get snow here in the DC area since I do not run winter tires on the m3. It was great for that plus the occasions where I take it to the beach with friends since the car seats up to seven. it was just not fun to drive. Here are my options:
1) Get one of these cars as my 2nd vehicle. Leasing or buying, I will try to stay under $1,000.00 a month budget for the 2nd car. For one reason or another I've been looking at these lately: -2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited (or the upcoming SRT-8) -2011 Acura MDX -2011 Acura TL SH-AWD -2009/2010 Escallade -2011 Toyota sienna (yes, the minivan !) 2) Not getting a second car and just put winter tires on the m3 when snow comes. Pay off the car in a couple of years and then use that monthly amount plus my 1k budget (=2k / month) and get something near the exotic realm. An r-8, 911 turbo, or an 08 clk63 black series (the best looking car I've ever seen in person) would be something that I'm interested in. I'm single with no kids so space is not really necessary. Anyone here have had similar choices? Last edited by Petlizard; 03-04-2011 at 08:41 AM.. |

I'm the wrong guy to ask - both my cars are 2-seaters with ~300hp.
Personally, and I mean no insult by this, but people that refuse to drive their M3s year-round are doing it wrong, imo. The only reason to get an M3 over a dedicated sports car like an M Coupe or Porsche 911 or whatever is that the M3 offers 90% of the performance while still being year-round practical with the proper tires for the season. I say man up and go with option two, or go all the way: sell the M3 and buy a real, full-on sports car, then get an old truck or beater for winter and hauling. |

Why bother with an expensive second car? Get a Suby impreza or WRX and save. Instead of paying 1000/month you might pay 300/month keep the difference and save it for the next car. There is no real need to have to expensive cars. I'd rather scoot around in a Golf-Jetta and have an R8 in my garage then drive an S4 and Escalade combo. The only way for me to have an expensive second car is if I was some kind of executive or baller that couldn't be seen driving a peasant car but that's not my case.

Option #2 appears to be more popular. I must admit that it's a more desirable one for me too. I just hope that the m3 can handle winter decently with a proper set of snow tires.

That's reassuring to hear. We don't get much around this area minus the once-every-ten-years snow mageddon. |

A 4wd car might be the best on snowy roads. But i mean, there is a reason why we often see 4wd SUV`s in the ditch :P SUV handle like crap on snow, and the 4wd also makes most people so cocky, like their unbeatable and can drive 1 millions mph on the snow.
I cant see why u cant have a M3 on the snow. I often drive my dads 730d F01 the snow and its no problem. So yes, go with option #2. Gets som proper European winter tires atleast |

Option 2. Then get an Audi R8, Lambo Gallardo, or Porsche 911 Turbo
Throw some snow tires on the AWD supercar and youve got yourself a year round car. |

Audi A4 allround would be perfect to be honest. It looks much better then the regular avant aswell. Especially the grill.
Ive driven the A6 saloon with quattro, and it does handle great on snow, and its much more relaxing do drive then a beemer. |

Get a winter beater, save the M3 for decent weather (when the nuts are careening around corners on bald summer tires in the snow) and save the money for your exotic. Taking on 2 payments at the same time isn't always a great idea, and there is something romantic(?) about having a cheap car that you can take/park anywhere without worrying about a door ding.
