Legal Question - publishing home images

Regarding publishing a book with photographs of homes (exterior, from street).

Do I have to obtain permission from home owners?
If so, why not google?

I've had this idea floatin in my head for some time, but always get stuck at this legal area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

I think as long as you take the photo from a public area and that you don't publish the address or the owner's info, you should be fine.

they make profits of ads etc. but you don't have to pay to see the houses. OP wants to publish a book with houses - which i assume he wants to sell the books hence a viewer has to pay to see

In short. As long as the photograph is taken from a public place then you do not need permission to take the photograph.

However, architectural works became subject to copyright in 1990 so any building built after that are subject to copyright laws so you can not duplicate the photograph without the building owners permission.

Google gets around this because of the "fair use" rule, the rule which applies to news, education and research.

Thank u sir, you provided a wealth of information. I would assume that a home remodeled within the last decade would NOT be subject to copyright ad long as they were originally built before 1990 as you mentioned
