I always try to give them spare change that I have in my car went they approach to the car

I fell bad for them I drive a bimmer and they don't even have a house

In downtown san francisco, homeless just like others, they do work, they do have supervisor, they have to switch location in different time. The only difference is others are wearing suit, they are wearing some unpresentable uniform.

It's funny when everyone's excuse for not giving out change is 'they're just going to spend it on drugs and alcohol'. What do you expect them to do? There is a reason that these people are homeless. They usually cannot just 'go and get a job' like you because they are usually felons or they have mental issues that disallow them from getting jobs (or staying sane). In any case, they aren't going to live very long and I'm sure that they understand this. So, hey, why not get drunk or high? There's no way anyone's going to put a down-payment on a house with spare change, anyways.

On topic..I usually give whatever change I have handy..I also feel bad for them, while some put themselves there, I am sure others have just had some bad luck in the past..

People in North America has never seen poverty elsewhere in the world, go to many South East Asian countries or even China, all you see on TV these days of China is about how powerful and successful the economy is and how everyone is getting so rich, but once you step out into the country side, there are still a lot of poverty in the rural areas, people don't have fresh water, sanitation, roads, etc

homeless people here beg for money for drugs in North America, poor people elsewhere don't even have the basic needs of survival, they are struggling to stay alive while homeless people here just want to get high and drunk

i have no sympathy for those homeless people who have arms and legs that can still work for money but only want to get high and drunk, its not like they aren't functional human beings, but if they are physically disabled, then the story would be totally different

Sorry, but I must disagree with you. "If there's a will, there's a way," I mean, yes it's nice to help and such, but by giving them your change, you're just condoning their pathetic actions. You might ask who the f... are you and what do you know...well, I work at a convenience store and I deal with these type of people all the time. It just gets ridiculous. If I know that they've been asking for change or loitering in front of the store, I refuse service to them because they should know better. If you want to help, I suggest non-profit organizations instead. At least they'll try to fix the problem.

I don't and probably never will give them change. people can call me a prick all you want, but they don't know the whole story. I was shot 3 times and paralyzed while deployed in afghanistan. You think you've seen poor here in the states, THEY are poor. Anyways, the amount of shit you have to put up with and deal with to have a semi-active life living as a paraplegic is pretty extensive and time consuming, not to mention a big test of attitude, character, and patience. Even though I am compensated very well with a 100% service-connected injury, money will never ever buy everything. I would GLADLY trade my 335, my 60" TV, and all the money in my bank accounts, for their ability to walk again.

And not to mention most of the people asking for handouts here in Albuquerque are nothing but frickin' meth addicts......

Its a tough situation. I used to give money all the time, was dissapointed in how many scams are out there. My feeling is I pay alot in taxes which goes to fund shelters and social projects and I give alot to charitys. If people need help, there are plenty of organizations out there. Illegals walk over the border and get Government funds and access to social programs, im sure the homless can too. Im not saying they are all scams, but thoes guys I see out there all the time are probably making more (tax free) than I do.

Being homeless in the U.S. is really f*cked up.

You can't generalize about all homeless people - there are so many different reasons for being on the street. I think many are there because of addiction, others from mental illness. Some deserve handouts, others do not. Which ones? Nobody knows.

Don't forget beggers have been around since the beginning of time; it's not a U.S. problem. Unfortunately, it is really out of control here in the states.

No easy answers.

Personally, I've never given handouts, but have recently been reconsidering my policy. I think about this a lot.

How do you fix homelessness in the U.S.? I don't think cash is the answer.

When I was in NYC. I would give money depending on the situation. There was a homeless guy that would ride the A line all the time. He was a handicapped vet and the conductors would always slam the door ON him when he was trying to get on. I've spoke to him a couple times and I give him some money.

I also give money and food to the big bald guy on the A line as well. He uses the money to buy food and give to other homeless people.

I've had some homeless people approach me with the same story on different days. Those people I don't give money to. Especially if the story doesn't really work the second time around...

Homeless guy: "Can I have some money? I'm lost, I just got out of the hospital and they only give me enough money for one subway fare home. Well I got off at the wrong stop and I need money to get back on."

Two days later, the same exact subway station and the same homeless guy...

Me: You've been lost two days straight. You haven't moved at all over those two days. An your still lost. Buddy you've got more problems than not having enough money. Make up a new story or atleast remember who you've told that story too.

I think most of us have the heart to help people, if we knew we were actually helping them. Back when I was in Chicago, if I saw a homeless guy under the L and he was asking for a handout, Id walk right into the McD's and buy him a meal and leave. I won’t give them cash straight up.

As for justifying drug use by the homeless, thats asinine. Do you condone the highly associated criminal behavior of drug addicts? I sure wouldn’t want to contribute to a robbery, mugging, carjacking, murder of someone because a homeless drug addict was whacked out on drugs that I helped purchase.

Unfortunately, the bad always screw it up for the good. Just like people that break down on the side of the road, or the hitchhiker. They are probably ok people that just need help, but the possibility of something going awry, keeps many from helping.

If you want to make a difference, there are many good community organizations that help support the homeless. They will know how to use your money better than giving a single homeless person $5.
