So whats faster, SMG or 6 speed
Any of you guys here actually drive both, and know which one is faster in the 1/4 mile?

isn't the smg the fastest shifting tranny you can get besides Ferrari paddles? I think SMG with launch control would win more consistently whereas the 6 could have the overall fastest time by a small margin.

never mind, I think I've just answered my own question by visiting your garage. your 2006 325 has STEPTRONIC, which in no shape or form resembles a SMG transmission

The SMG III with drivelogic is the fastest bmw tranny. It is faster then 6spd. I believe its second to the ferrari paddles but its clearly faster then 6spd. I have an m6 and the shift speed in M mode in S6, is pretty much instant. By the time a person driving manual can think about moving his hand from 1-2 the SMG is there and almost halfway through.

They are the same transmission, same gearing, same ratio's. It's just that the SMG shifts for you, and does it very quickly.
It's a driver's race, but the SMG should perform far more consistently. It doesn't miss shifts, either. |

We could also be talking M3 and in that case, the fastest 1/4 times I've seen posted have been with 6-speeds. Now if we're talking M5 then you're right. The 6-spd in the M5 sucks. New M3, different ballgame.

I was thinking about the M3 SMG vs 6 spd...The M6 tranny is for rich people...which I am not.

![]() Edit: WTF, I've just seen multiple sites say that SMG II does 80ms shifts. New comment. SMG > all.
