"Bottom line, the M5 ends up tied with on the second place with the AMG, behind the more expensive and faster Porsche Panamera Turbo S."

Track times:

Panamera turbo S 1:16.0
M5 1:16.8
E63 1:17.0

Turbo S was also fastest to all speeds in the straight line contest, had better slolom speed and was also stopped shorter than the m5/e63 despite weighing more.

Predictable when you consider the Panamera Turbo S's lower weight, AWD, and higher price tag.

Acutally the turbo S is heavier and has slightly less power. Price has nothing to do with speed, but the quality you get in the Panamera is light years ahead of anything BMW or Merc (or any car really) can do and while its very expensive, it feels every bit as good as what you pay.
The track times show you just how great it handles, and Porsches AWD in dry conditions puts 100% power to the rears.

Ok, you have me at technicalities...so the Panamera's curb weight is about 50lbs lighter...it still has the obvious handling advantages of a trick-AWD system. When we're discussing power in the mid-500 range, combined with cars weighing around two ton mark, traction issues are paramount; the Panamera Turbo S's AWD will no doubt lay down a cleaner exit out of any corner, and I'm sure there's more to it than that. Plus the Panamera clearly isn't down on power; its combined 550bhp & 553lb-ft are more than a match for the M5's 560bhp & 502lb-ft output.

In your opinion. I dont think so. Pan looks great and the interior puts anything (esp BMW) to shame. Whether you like it or not, its the super sedan king.
The M5 on the other hand is boring, mundane and completely lacking in pressence. The Pan has pressence on the road few cars compare to.

Despite its superior( sort of....0.8 seconds on a track ) performance I'd choose the classic saloon with a real boot and not the way-too -expensive(compared to the other two) pooing-dog-shaped car with a Porsche badge. Please don't call it a sedan/saloon, it's not. Sorry.

.8 seconds on a 1 minute and change lap is a lot.

Suprisingly, the regular turbo with the powerkit is even faster than the turbo S.

Either way, the performance of these big cars is astounding no matter what and the panamera has seriously stepped up the game as Ive never driven a big car that is as precise or composed. And when you consider the Panamera is about 4 years old it just shows how high the bar has been raised when two new to market cars (as the m5 and e63 are) cant beat one thats been around for many years now.
As for price, youve got to pay to play. Combine the performance, the exclusivity and the substanially (maybe exponentially) better quality/fit/finish it has over the m5/e63 youre going to pay a lot.

Ever been to Hockenheim? I have.

A 1M does it in 1:14.1 and that isn't a lightweight either....

Those big cars are just big cars, too heavy. A Panamera/Cayenne isn't worth a Porsche badge anyway. I'm aware of BMW marketing myself, but you sound like you're a victim of Porsche marketing.

About the price difference, it's too much for such a small difference in numbers. Let alone the rwd + lsd vs awd discussion To each his own, and I know a E63/M5 already is very expensive, but a bargain compared to the Porker. The Porker should have smoked the other two. But it didn't.

I thought BMW could sell ANYTHING expensive with a roundell on it. But we have a winner here .

(And we all should buy a big fat heavy not so elegant Nissan GTR)

There is only one King(though I'm a republican guy in a monarchy called the Netherlands) and it's not Elvis. It's the Ferrari FF.
Talking about performance and price differences. But fair enough.

Whats the point of mentioning Hock?

A Cayman R runs 1:12.4 on hockenheim and its got a similar power to weight as the 1M.
And a regular panamera turbo does 1:13.7.

BMW like the last M5 wont sell many and in 2 years they will be 1/2 price. They could never sell a car at pan turbo prices. Porsche sold 9000 panameras in the first 3 months they were on sale with almost 50% being turbo models. I doubt BMW will sell that many M5s in 6 months.

You're really arguing preferences at this point. To be disappointed in any of those cars makes you look like a fool.

I think emotional appeal is more important than anything when you've got three solid choices like this. I've always loved the Panamera, but the M5 would probably sell me as a whole product from a combined aesthetics/performance/comfort pov.

Or I'd say fuck it and go with a CLS63.

I would take the new CLS63 over any of these.

CLS is a goodlooker just like the M5.

Anyway. Found it in one of my 'older'carmags( a month or so ago)
Horst von Saurma/Sportauto carmag did Hockenheim Kurz in 1:12.9. with the new M5.That's more like it.

Makes you think who drove those cars in the Autozeitung test? My grandma(RIP)?

It's all about personal preferences to pay a lot more for such an ugly car, with more or less the same specs.

Sorry, but sometimes I feel the urge to discuss way too much with 'Porsche fanboys'

*still saving for a Ferrari 458*
