128 and 135

Started seeing some information in the trade publications about the new series. Probably a good move by BMW to make the cars more affordable and improve the bottom line. If I understand correctly, they are using the same engines as 3 series, but vehicle costs are $1000s less and performance may be better. However, after shelling out $45K for a 335I recently, I frankly feel betrayed by BMW. I thought I was getting something special, not some mass produced Taurus. Thoughts?

news flash, your 335 IS a mass production vehicle, the 3 series accounts for about 50% of BMW's sales, it's a dime a dozen.

BMW, like every other car manufacturers , utilize economies of scale, using one engine in several applications, as to maximize profit

Well, another way to look at it is that the 3 Series gets the same engines that are in the 528 & 535.

be thankful you are not in Canada I will be shelling out over ( deposit only so far ) over $70K w/taxes ($66.5 K US) for a basic 335 coupe O8 coupe (no prem, no nav, no idrive no Ca etc) and the dealer figures it will be more when they get the 08 pricing. Then when the free maintenance and warranties expire in 4 years we will get killed on resell as people import the cheaper American versions.

Acura did alright selling the EL model for many thousands over a Honda Civic and no one bitched, they gladly paid the extra to say they drove an Acura. With the one series you are actually getting less of a car, I'm assuming that backseat is going to be cramped, plus the styling doesn't cut it with me at least. Kind of like the old 318Ti sure it was cheaper but they didn't sell well.

sorry read your post after. The 318 ti did not have great resell prices but more importantly it had no effect on the resell prices of 318i's so I won't worry too much about that.

if you look at the price of the 3er in other markets, you'd quit your bitching about the Canadian pricing, we're 2nd lowest in the world after the US.

All established cars eventually head up market. The 3 series moving up created space below it for the 1 Series.

The 135 and the 335i buyers will have totally different demographics. No doubt it will be a rocket and and there will be some overlap with the BMW enthusiast crowd...but the 335 is a bigger and more luxurious car. A 135 will be like a muscled-up mini cooper. Spartan, responsive and focused.

The 'entry-level fashionista' crowd will buy the 1 series (mostly in 128i trim) and folks who wanted an attractive second car, but the 3 series was too expensive.

Barring a monumental miscalculation by BMW marketing, the resale value of your 335 is safe.

Cheers

Sorry, but you won't get much sympathy from any of the "foreign" E90 posters. Prices in Canada are 2nd cheapest in the world.

edit: Canucklion, didn't see your post.

Wow, comparing a 335i to a Taurus. Try a Porsche or a gently used Ferrari next time.

De90man. Yea, I agree. I thought there was already a tuner market for 335I's. For BMW, makes marketing sense. Only time will tell regarding resale.

Sure it is

Have you noticed that the BMW enthusiasts out there, the folks who are into driving and Not worshiping the roundel aren't sweating it? In fact they are excited about the 1 series finally coming to the states.

Interesting.
