Im going to Greece in a few weeks for vacation. I want to buy my cousin a gift and he has asked me for the Garmin 526s chart plotter. He just wants the device for measuring depths of the water in order to understand where he can catch certain fish. I have checked online and this device goes for around 700-900 dollars. I am willing to spend around 300-500 really. Does anyone know of a comparable product that i can get him (it could be used as well) that also has a menu in greek? Thanks

I do alot of offshore fishing and have exp with GPS's/plotters.
The Garmin 526 is soley a GPS/plotter unit. It displays picture of nautical charts with hazards, navigation aids and depth but its not a depth finder. Companys make units that offer split screen GPS/depth recorders but this isnt one of them. He gave you a manufacturer name and model number so I assue he knows what hes talking about but its odd the way you describe he wants to know the depth. Thats usually not what a GPS is used for. A depth finder itself is much more accurate and useful for finding fish. I would verify with him what exactly he needs. And as mentioned already, there are cheaper alternatives to GPS and depth finders that work well. The Garmin is a good unit but in the marine electronics game, you get what you pay for. You'll get more informative charts, color opposed to B&W, better resolution and navigation ability.

Interesting that cousin would ask for such an expensive gift. My cousins and I will buy a couple beers for birthdays and call it a day.

Yep, I use 2 Garmin boxes side by side, a simple B&W RF depth/fish finder, and a nicer color GPS. Like the setup, would think having both on one screen would be a bit cluttered.

I just got off the phone with him and he confirmed that he wants to only a) read the depth of the waters, b)have a map so he can mark where he leaves his nets or fishing traps in the sea. Am i better off buying him two separate devices? will that be less expensive? help me out guys.

I also prefer two seperate units. The split screen is to small and switching back and forth is a pain. I like to look at a rip, wreck or other structure on the depth sounder and have the GPS chart displayed also. Makes it much easier to get consistant drifts or trolls.

I live closer to the North shore but most of my fishing in South. I sold my G.W. Offshore a couple years back when I purchased my Corvette. Nowadays I fish on friends boats. Thinking about getting back in my own boat again. You?

Family has a 25.5 sea ray that we take out occasionally, mid-north shore, out of Port Jeff. Just looking for any good spots that maybe you'd know of local to me.

We head out to Montauk towards the end of the summer each year, spend the night, and go for stripers+blues in the morning. Great fishing.

I usually use word of mouth from other fishermen in the area and I utilize this web site.http://www.noreast.com/homepage/index.cfm
You get up to the minute reports from any area across the Island. On the N shore close to you is the Eatons Neck "Triangle". A couple mile from Pt Jeff but worth the trip. A great bottom area that has good amounts of fluke, bluefish, bonito and huge bass are pulled out from there. Anchoring up and fishing bunker chunks accounts for many 30-40lb stripers. Diamond Jigging is also great here.
Montauk in the fall is fishermans paradise. I make several trips every season there that time of year. During the fall bass migration you have to work hard not to catch huge bass!
