5 things you want your kids to know
I was watching Flight 93 last night and I couldn't help but think about what these people were thinking about when they began to realize they weren't going to make it back to their families. Being a father, I sometimes worry that my children won't get know what I want to tell or teach them before I die. What are 5 things that you would want your children to know?

1. No one owes you anything, it must be earned.
2. In the rare circumstance when someone is given more than you it's not because you are less deserving and it's not necessarily your fault. It's just the way the world works. 3. Serve something greater than yourself. 4. Ensure you provide positive and generational growth for your family - continue the legacy. 5. Remember that I will always love you and do right by you. Do the same for your kids in our memory. As a side note, I'm a little drunk right now. And I lost an active duty friend in The Pentagon that day. And many since...

I'm sorry about that. I lost one in one of the planes that hit the trade center that day a few since in Iraq.
I forgot my list: 1. Be a person of your word. Just because people don't keep theirs doesn't mean you have to be the same as them. 2. Don't blame luck or karma on outcomes. Make your own destiny. 3. Fail trying. Don't quit before giving your all. 4. Balance is the key to everything. If you are off balance in any one part of your life, the others will suffer. 5. Know that at the end of it all, you only have family that you can rely on. Most friends come and go according to what you do and where you are in life. |

Things my father told me that he learned/picked-up over his years. The following are the ones that stuck because I learned them the hard way.
1. Learn as much as you can while you can. For when the time comes when you have to use your knowledge, you'll know what to do because you took the time to learn it and not just memorize it. 2. 'Don't get treed by a Chihuahua.' 3. Assume nothing. Assess your situation and make sure its real. 4. Life won't be fair for you or anybody 5. Rely on nobody but yourself because sooner or later everyone you know will let you down in one way or another. |

1. Even though I push you to do more, I am proud of all you have accomplished (told him that a few weeks ago)
2. Life AIN'T fair 3. Get in there and get dirty. You can take a shower later, even shit washes off 4. Just do it right the first time, right being the way your (insert female in question) wants it. It's S O O O much easier, and you will end up doing it anyways (told him that a few days ago, AGAIN) 5. Smile |

Interesting thread, OP.. Lots of great advice.
+1 to most everything that has been stated itt. My personal emphasis would be on integrity, honesty, accountability, and modesty. Say what you do and do what you say. Oh, and don't be a showy bastard just because you can. There is always someone bigger, better, and more wealthy than you. |
