335 vs M5 (E39)

I drive my 335i, Stock with 6000 miles.
The M5 Stock 25,000 miles (very well mantained)

We went from 45mph 2nd gear to 120mph.

The interesting thing, was that the 335 jump to 7000rpm and I guess 2 to 3 seconds later I was 2 cars away and maybe 5 to 8 seconds later I was more than a block away....

before the try, I thought that would be much closer (or even loose)

ANyhow.. I juts wanted to share it with all of you.

Guys he's talking about the e39 M5...the 394 hp 4.9 liter V8 version.
It has acceleration times pretty much dead on with a stock 335i.
If the e39 m5 is driven badly, I can see it losing to a stock 335i by a couple car lengths.

I don't see it happen without the PROcede. Stock for stock, the M5 will win...this assuming the drivers are equal.

Only an E39. If you matched your year old 335i against a year old E60 M5, you'd be admiring his quad pipes from a distance.

Again, I wouldn't quite say he'll walk a 335i "easy'.

Not to magazine race here, but since I've never driven the e39 M5 it's the only thing I can go on.
I keep a data base of hundreds of car road tests.
Between 2000-2003 there have been about 8-9 tests of the e39 M5.
The 0-60 times range from 4.6 fastest to 4.99 slowest with most in the 4.8 range.
In the 1/4 mile it ranges from 13.1 fastest to 13.4 slowest with most in the 13.2-13.3 range. Trap speeds range from 105.7 to 109 mph.
But those were anamolies, by far most were in the 107 mph range.

These times are about .1-.2 seconds and 1-2 mph faster than the 335i stock times.

That clearly makes it a drivers race.
And with variations on individual cars this particular M5 might of been one that would do the 13.4 @ 105.7 and the OP's 335i might be particularly quick and do 13.3 @ 106+ mph.

Also keep in mind elevation. The M5 will do better if driven well at sea level but as elevation rises, the better the 335i will do regardless of how well the e39 M5 was driven.
At 3000 feet in elevation, I'd put my money on a well driven 335i over a well driven e39 M5. And at 5000+ elevation it'll be the 335i doing the walking.

But granted the OP was in Miami, and to beat the e39 M5 by several car lengths, the driver of the e39 (as I originally stated) just doesn't know how to drive well, and probably let off once he realized he wasn't going to win.

I don't get why people always bring up 0-60 and 1/4 mile times when comparing races from a roll. The E39 M5 weights 4000lbs. So it's going to take a lot more power to get it going from a dead stop. The 335 is lighter. However, from a roll, it's a different story here.

I forgot the race was from a roll

But even so, trap speeds in 1/4 mile times give you the best indicator of pulling power once rolling.
Gearing also plays a huge role in a rolling race. The e39 M5 seems to trap a couple mph faster on average than the 335i.
So yes, from a roll the M5 should pull a bit on a stock 335i. It would take a PROcede 335i to creep on a well driven e39 M5

Gearing also plays a huge role in races from a roll.
2nd gear at 45 mph might not be best for the e39 M5, and be more optimal for the 335i.
That's why with rolling races you need to do several starting at different speeds and different gears to even out the advantage one car may have over the other starting at just one particular speed.

However again, whenever two cars are within .2-.3 tenths and 2 or so mph it's more often than not a drivers race.

Again, clearly the e39 M5 driver just didn't know how to shift fast and/or when to shift his car for optimal acceleration if he was beaten by a couple CL's from a roll.
