Roundel to Star Cluster

Tomorrow I will be departing from my beloved 2007 BMW 335i E92 sport cruiser to a awd rally monster Subaru WRX Sti. I will post some pics tomorrow. Curious if anyone has gone "a step backwards" as everyone I have spoken to and think that trading my 50k BMW is a downgrade to a subaru...

Regardless I have been looking for something AWD 6-speed, and wouldn't take anything less than 300hp which I have been accustomed to and then some from the TT I6.

All I can say is congrats. I used to own a Subaru, I loved that car, especially during the winter. I love my BMW more, but then again my Subaru didn't have 300hp.

Loved my STi, especially in the snow, it was way too much fun. The interior rattles and terrible mpgs eventually got to me.

Came from an Evo X to my M3.

Never looked back, I think it's just me wanting less rattles and more refinement.

The Subie is a great car, have fun with it.

I love my suby forester almost as much as I love my m3, different reasons but both are impressively enjoyable.

yeah i am excited either way, the AWD and little more raw factor is what I was after. I will definitely miss the 335 that's for sure.

Interior isn't too bad if you get the Limited edition. The leather makes it look more refined. Definitely more plastic than the BMW though. My dad owns an 07 335, and I owned a 2012 Limited STi. Was a fantastic car. I wish I still had it, but my commute changed, and suddenly 19-20mpg wasn't very much .

Being able to dial the front to rear split was fun though . That thing gripped more than anything else I've ever driven. Adjusting the engine mapping via a dial was fun too.

People have different priorities. While full of plastic, it's far from "garbage" and most cars with really stiff suspension setups will develop rattles exentually. I dated a girl for a few years who drove an STi during the time I had my Lotus. It was funny because nobody EVER complained that my Exige interior was shitty but always commented on the quality, or lack thereof, in the Subi. The STi was like a Maybach in terms of interior quality compared to the Lotus.

If you want a nice interior, by all means stick to a BMW, but if that is not your main focus then getting the STi is a no brainer. They are great cars for what they are and they don't claim to be anything more or less than that. They're certainly more reliable than the X35i models of late.

question for you ---- how do you like your S4. In terms of reliability how is it? My 335 was awful and i traded it in for a jetta and a peace of mind. I have been toying with getting a performance german car for a while now (the itch never dies), but am too afraid to pull the plug after my disastrous experience with the 335. Any comments would be helpful.

I quite like it. I put an AWE exhaust on it and it sounds like a monster. The MMI version that I have is terrible but I understand the newer iterations are much better. My only complaint is that it feels like the clutch is starting to go at 39k. I'm NOT happy about that little problem since I bought the car CPO less than six months ago. The drive select and sport diff options are really nice to have as well. My tuned 135i was MUCH faster but with a baby on the way, the coupe wasn't cutting it.

Enjoy it. Great package - look forward to seeing what they do with the new one. Sedan or hatch?

I seriously considered and test drove a WRX before buying my M3 (used), but couldn't get over the transmission and the interior (worse than my Mazda 3). Haven't driven an STi, but I understand the transmission is far better, and can only assume the interior is upgraded, too. If I went for a new STi, price for what I wanted was going to be high 30s, so upping my price ceiling some got me into my current car.

You'll have plenty of opportunity to put the AWD to use in Boston!

The car is a 2013, so no mods as of yet. I don't plan on doing anything for a few years (ideally). However, as any auto enthusiast can tell you, it's very difficult to not make the car your own/unique.
Reason for my choice was pre-dominantely due to the fact that warranty is expiring in August of this year, the car soon needed tires in the back, and it being my DD I couldn't
take another winter on the 3 any longer.
A car 6 years newer, with full warranty, good deal for the STI although it is the base model, I felt I made the right choice

But no major gremlins correct? Just as a point of reference, the 335 had the following problems

1.) 4 fuel pumps
2.) break squeal
3.) wing mirror motor
4.) washer fluid motor

so on and so forth

Also OP; this is a good choice. You can't complain about making such a solid choice. Sometimes I feel that people are under the illusion that expensive = better; the truth cannot be further from that. I suppose it has to do with low self esteem, but do let us know how the scooby feels in terms of drivability and fun factor. BTW; are you getting the hatch or sedan (assuming its the current gen)

I had a pump fail in my 1er as well as the brake squeel that lasted for two years before I finally lost my shit at the dealer and they changed them. Both problems were completely fixed after the initial failure. You were an early adopter which can be problematic for any car. I haven't had any major issues but I've only had it for six months. There are threads about water pump failures but it doesn't seem as common as our HPFP problems. Truth be told, if you want solid reliability, you should really go Japanese. German cars are relatively high maintenance.
