Installing Leopard Tonight
I managed to get my hands on Leopard a little early. I'll let all you other Mac users know how it goes.

You haven't had 9A581 for a couple of days. This is the GM.

I'm positive it's on usenet, don't know about BT. The guys in the office next to me are official resellers, so I'll be purchasing it for real to have for my dad and brother.

it looks like a ho-hum upgrade to me and not worth the $129. Let me know how it goes. I might drop by the store, but I'll get the OS when I upgrade a Mac.

For me, it's worth it for a much improved Finder and the ability to make widgets on the fly. Mail is greatly improved, as well.

apple's upgrade are always worth it, but based on what I have seen so far with it, you will eventually have to upgrade to it since there are features that software will take advantage of and the Old OS will not support. Plus this one of the few time where and update will make some hardware useless. This could be an expensive upgrade for some.

Plus, doesn't it come with the non-beta version of bootcamp?

i'm heading to the mac store tomorrow. my macbook's been crashing on me in the last few days pretty often. used to run like magic but it's been pretty terrible. going to ask if upgrading to leopard is worth it. I was seriously thinking of doing it anyway thouhg. If not, my warranty has run out and i'm going to have to start haggling

I have had the GM for a day or so, its a decent upgrade. Its like most OSX upgrades, it doesn't seem all that different at first, then you realize it has these little changes that make it work alot better.

It would depend on what revision of PBG4 it is. Here are the min specs:
Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor 512MB of memory DVD drive for installation 9GB of available disk space Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply. Some features require Apple's .Mac service; fees apply.

For backup I use SuperDuper and it works great for me. But it's just a home computer, so as long as I have my documents, photos and other media backed up, I'm happy. Nice thing about cloning is that you can take the backup drive to work in case of fire.... I am a 100% Mac convert and would normally be excited about this stuff, but Leopard seems like such a minor revision on the surface. I'll get it when I upgrade to Intel, but till then I'll stick 10.4 - which is 100% reliable for now.

Yeah, unless you're a big nerd like I am, I can see why it's not all that attractive. Overall, things are snappier (especially application launching), the Finder is 100% better but still not as good as it should be, and Spaces and Time Machine are really great implementations of existing technology.
You can justify the price by getting the family pack and splitting the cost between a few friends and family, if you like.
