Question Who brews their own beer?

Thinking about getting into brewing my own beer. I'm a new n00b so any advice, suggestions, etc is much appreciated.

I'd start with attempting to brew standard beer, but I want to get into flavors that some may consider odd.

I usually find it more efficient to just buy it at the shop down the street.

LOL. You haven't had micro brewed beer? It's completely different then store bought beer.

I've never brewed at home though.

I've thought about it, I need a new hobby, but I'm lazy, so I much prefer just drinking it.

These guys are down the street from me anyways

I was just down there. Went to a few places & tried a lot of beers, but didn't know about that place. Next time!

Oh, I agree with you there: micro brewed beer is most definitely different than the big brand beers. Some are good, some are decent and some are just dreadful. I've drank beers made by people who made it at home, and again, some are good, some are decent and some are downright awful.

I'm about to try again soon. I tried a Sam Adams style beer several years ago and it came out OK, nothing that there was some sediment at the bottoms of the bottles. This probably won't become anything more than a passing experiment every once in a while. There are several breweries (BluePoint, Greenport, Brooklyn, Southampton, etc) around here that all make beer way better than I ever will.

2 of my friends brew their own beer, they make brew some pretty good beers. One has been doing it for awhile the other just started last summer.
Only tip I remember them saying was to not get the brew kit at the local target/walmart

I've brewed two batches of home brewed beer. One was the best beer I've ever had and the other was the worst. It's a huge pain in the ass so I've been purchasing beer ever since.

^ this is how I also feel. I have several friends who brew and while some make great beer, others are terrible. Even great homebrewers can have a bad batch.

If you're doing it to save money, I'd say you're wasting your time. If you want to do it to learn more about the intricacies of beer, then home brewing is a great way to know beer. Becoming a certified beer judge is another good way to learn beer though..

For me, I enjoy brewing with friends, but still have a fridge full of production beers.

Before dropping a few hundred bucks on equipment, try to find someone you can shadow for a couple times to see how you like it - and make sure to be especially careful with sanitation if you do decide to brew as that's what is probably the biggest source if error

Yeah I was never doing it to save money - it was always about hanging with the guys, drinking and brewing.

I brew a batch about once every 1-2 months, usually order from northern brewer. Once you get the methodology down its easy. Actually cooked a batch up last night, Kiwi Tangerine Wit. Should be neat.

I've been brewing for about 4 years and have 10 5 gallon kegs of beer stocked in numerous fridges or freezers (with a temp regulator set to 37 degrees). I'm also a member of homebrewtalk.com and would highly recommend starting there if you're interested in home brewing. There are plenty of people willing to help out with any questions you may have and loads of recipes to start with. Happy brewing!

Actually if I remember correctly I did open the box. I looked at the instructions lost interest and closed the box.
