Wireless Broadband Card: AT&T

Anybody every try one of these? Do they work well? Do they give you decent speed if you are in a 3g coverage area?

How do they compare, speedwise to a cable modem(obviously I wouldn't use it in my house, just curious)?

My buddy signed up for the Alltel one that uses your phone as the connection so it's not exactly a card but works under the same premise. Anyways it wasn't slow but was no where near fast. It was prolly a little faster then 56K, but considering you could use it anywhere it's better then nothing.

I use it frequently and routinely. Not broadband like home, but certainly with 3G is fast enough for most think you want to do while you're on the road... Anywhere you can get a cell signal, you can use the card...

Not sure, check out www.alltel.com, they have the card or the package to use your phone. He had the one that used his phone.

We issue the AT&T 3g cards at work, but I got mine before we rolled it out, so I have a sprint card. The sprint card is significantly faster. On a good day it works as well as my DSL, on a bad day it's 4-5x faster than a modem.

Yea Sprint is the only name to consider when you want a data card.. They are the only company who offers true unlimited data. Verizon has a cap of 5 gigs a month. With sprint your looking at 2-3mbps download and 400-500kbps upload. I use my blackberry to tether and for normal web surfing and what not you cant tell the difference between it and cable, but of course when you download large applications like 50mb's then you can tell a difference. (then again keep in mind my blackberry is EVDO rev 0 and Rev A like the data cards so my blackberry has slightly slower speeds and higher latency.)

Curious - trying to avoid the wireless fees that hotels charge?

I s'pose everyone has a different reason. I have one because I spend a lot of time out of the office, so I can keep up with work in between meetings. I give them to my techs and mechanics so they can access documentation from the field - so much of what we do requires internet access, and from a construction site, that can be tough.

I have the AT&T Wireless Card. It runs a lot faster than the previous EDGE network card. The only problem is that there are a lot of places where AT&T does not yet have 3G coverage. In that case it defaults back to the "sluggish" EDGE network. I get mine for free from work so I'm stuck with AT&T. Otherwise, I would have gotten the Sprint.

Does the AT&T 3g card perform similiar to DSL?

Go with Sprint! Their cards are much faster and its a beautiful experience. I was even in the back of a car surfing the net through the middle of northern cal near nothing. Full high speed data! Beautiful thing!
