And there we have it. The person you should be upset with and holding accountable is YOU.

No, thank you.
You have issues. I hope being a keyboard warrior fulfills you and makes you happy. I would thank you again, but you have yet to provide any useful information.

I gave you a great idea. Your problem is a cellular connection, your SIM card won't initiate a firmware update with a non-US IP address. I highly suspect there are devices that can do this exact thing if you would be bothered to go to a cellular forum and ask your questions there.
Are the real taillights different between the US and EU? I’ve seen a video of an EU car that had amber turn signals in the tail light
I did a deep dive last night and learned that there is no difference between the TCB’s between the 2025 and 2026 models. It looks like the software update pushed out in the summer of 2025 allows the vehicle to access the German cell networks.

I just need to figure out how to get that software update since BMW isn’t willing to do it manually. Might take a trip across a border to see if I can get it.

Believe chris3g's user avatarchris3g could do it for you remotely

So I wanted to recharge this to see if anyone had any more information that could help me. I have a US Spec X3 and currently living in Germany. I am registered on the US Connected Drive, so I can remote start, lock unlock with phone, etc. However, many of the options (driving assist, maps, data store, sign recognition), do not work here. When I drive across the german border, the maps and apps will work but still nothing else.

I know many things have been locked down for idrive 9. I guess my question is, would it be as simple as swapping out the US Telematics module for a like EU one, and then maybe having the idrive 9 reflashed to the EU version?

Quite frankly, I can live without the bells and whistles, but I do plan to live in Germany for the forseeable future, and if I can find a way to make it work, I will.

Thanks everyone and looking forward to seeing if anyone has any input.
Good morning, I wanted to update you on my progress. After months of communication with BMW I finally got them to agree to force an update my iDrive 9 software. I am waiting for them to schedule the appointment, should be next week.

Everything that I have read says that there is no difference between 25' and 26' model X3's other than the iDrive software. I am still on the 11.2024.40 SW version. From what I have read a SW release in the summer of 2025 resolved the issue that prevents the 25' model from accessing the German cell network and allows you to register your personal eSim with Ubigi. I will let you know if it works.

Did you ever get this update and did it work? In Europe and considering purchasing a new 2025 or 2026 X3 and want to hear how this turned out for you.
Hi Jason, i have offer to buy bmw X5 2023 with idrive 8.5. i think its the same what you describe here, carplay, ota updates etc. dont work. How is it after the update? Did you get the esim card working?
Hello!

I came back to this thread and it looks like it was quite busy! I brought my X3 in today to Euler in Kaiserslautern and specifically asked to have it updated. The service manager called me and told me that they could not do it because their software is currently v19 and they need to get v20 to be able to update it. I am assuming he is talking about their in house software. He also stated that there is a recall on my vehicle for software that they can also not do because of the version. They are looking to see how they can get it… I hope it’s soon. Not sure what the recall is for will have to look up when I’m at home. He also told me all x3s made after mid 2025 work in Europe, but he also mentioned it’s cause they got a new head unit, which I don’t think is the case. I’m with a lot of you and have my fingers crossed that when I do get an update, it will work…

Obtw the cellular works as soon as I cross the border to France or the Netherlands. Thinking of making a trip there and seeing if I can force the update OTA. Will definitely let everyone know if it works…
I was able to find the recall.

Unintended steering wheel movement while the vehicle is stationary increases the risk of an injury and on the road, a crash.

The steering system software will be updated, free of charge, either over-the-air (OTA) or by a dealer. Owner notification letters were mailed February 6, 2026. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning February 2, 2026.

Yes, that one is quite common and installing 11/2025.50 or higher software by RSU or dealer will fix it.

The software for the steering column sensors needs an update.
Good Afternoon!

Wanted to give a quick update.... I did end up driving across the border, and cellular worked as expected with all internet functionality (youtube, etc) a go. However when I tried to search for the update, it would not find it and just stayed stuck at searching. I tried the hard reset, and also the BMW app on my phone, but could not get it to trigger. I have it at the dealer right now to try to have them install it, but I am not sure that this dealer has the right things needed either. I also had to have the driver seat replaced because when I hit a bump or took a sharp turn, the seat back would shift, which wasn't necessarily a safety issue but annoying nonetheless!
I spent 3 years in Landstuhl Medical Center, just across the Autobahn from Ramstein. I had several fellow officers that bought German spec BMWs during their tour to avoid just what you are experiencing. Of course, they bought sedans and they were assembled in Germany. Did you export your X3 from the US or did you order it after you arrived? Seems that for Americans and maybe Canadians the best approach would be to purchase a Euro spec vehicle and then sell it before you return to the US or Canada. I know this doesn't help the OP but might make sense for others that anticipate living in Europe for a few years and then returning to the US.

You can purchase US Spec BMW's and other cars through Military Services and get them Tax free while you are overseas. The cost of a German Spec is way more than a US spec car, and then you would have to go through the hassle of selling the car when you leave, and sometimes you just don't have the time to do that because of how PCS's go. I went through a different Dealership than him and confirmed that the updates were working before I ordered mine. Mine just got built and will arrive in Germany in a few weeks. So hopefully the dealership isn't full of it, and the updates work on mine.
Good Afternoon!

I wanted to give a quick update. I took my X3 to BMW here in Kaiserslautern and they were able to update the software to 2026.03. The bad news, is that there is still no cellular signal and maps does not work. However the good news is the stereo sounds worlds better and now has spacial audio with Apple Music! I suppose I have to take my wins where I can get them! My wonder is if I bought a used EU headunit and telemetry unit off of eBay, would BMW be able to install them in my vehicle and code them? Really stinks not having many of the options Ive paid for and since Im not going back to the US anytime soon, I would gladly pay semi reasonable money to convert it.
If you plan to reside in Germany for the foreseeable future why not buy a Euro spec vehicle.
Great question.... the answer comes down to price. I bought my M50 here brand new for $58k. To buy a euro spec comparable in Germany, the price is at about 101k euros. The military program here is just too good at enticing people to buy the US spec option... I may complain about it, but being saddled with a deficiency that was fixed only a few months later with the 06.2025 models unfortunately more than makes up for the price difference... and like another poster here stated, I had to sign a form on delivery saying the maps didn't work.. What I didn't understand is that lack of cellular connectivity would hamstring so many other options in the vehicle. Don't get me wrong, its still an awesome vehicle, just a little un-nerving knowing so many features lay dormant behind a region locked feature that no longer exists in a few months newer model. First-World problem I know, which is why I take my small wins with spacial audio!

Hi! I live in Vienna, and have a North American 2025 X3 which I shipped over to Austria brand new in August 2025, not knowing about the update limitations, or my BMW ID not working. I want to visit an official BMW service centre here in Vienna to get the update and so on. Would you be able to assist with what I should say to them to expedite things? Thanks!
Good Morning!

So here in Germany, my BMW ID works okay, if yours does not work, I would contact BMW connected drive support and explain your situation. There were able to "unlock" mine but due to the cellular blocking here in Germany it ultimately did not work. As far as updates go, I did mine on the premise of the assisted driving recall earlier in this thread that mandated they update it for free in warranty. If you do not have that issue, you may have to pay a couple hundred out of pocket to do it. (Not sure if they do VAT forms in Austria of if you qualify). Does your cellular connection work in Austria? I found that when I drove to France, the cellular connection worked but it unfortunately did not trigger the update. Anyways, I would check on the recall, as it was a pretty widespread issue. What firmware are you on now? Thanks!

I understand your frustration and I would also be the same. I thought it might be possible to buy a Euro spec vehicle through the same vendor. The price difference is significant so I hope you can find a workaround to make your US spec X3 work correctly in Germany.
I took Delivery of my US Spec X3 M50 from the dealership in Wuerzburg yesterday. So far everything is working with the Europe maps and with the BMW app. Some of the signs read on the road some don't. The only thing I didn't try was the eSim and I wasn't planning on using that anyways.
