As with some of my previous BMW's, I've posted about the the end to end journey from order to shipping to arrival to driving. I'm looking forward to doing the same, with my newly ordered iX3 50 xDrive Sport Pro. While I appreciate this post may not be for everyone on the forum, I'm hoping there will be something of interest or value to many.

I decided to make the move to an EV a few years ago. This involved selling my M850i coupe (:party0030:) and moving to a Porsche Taycan (:barf:). The EV move I don't regret but the Taycan was a complete lemon. Given a range of factors, I also decided to move from a sedan to a SUV. As I was keen to return to BMW, I bought and now drive an iX M60, which has been flawless. It's a great car, with a few challenges that have been addressed in the recent LCI release (front end and seats).

It has been hard not to miss the promotion and announcement fervour of the iX3 neue klasse. What appealed to me was the new platform, tremendous range, technology updates and a car that is a little smaller than my iX. One thing which has really surprised me is the iX3 nk is available to order in Australia ahead of the US market. I cannot recall this ever happening before for any new BMW release. Our configurator went live on March 11 and I ordered my new car on March 12. Why is this so? Well one theory I have is the SUV market in Australia is our most bouyant and the Chinese manufacturers (BYD, Zeekr etc) have really targeted the segment with lower priced, higher spec vehicles, putting BMW's position in this segment under threat. The iX3 nk certainly provides a vehicle with the platform, options, pricing, range and performance to better compete.

My order is the iX3 50 xDrive M Sport Pro Package. Colour is Polarised Grey Metallic. I did think of Silver and Blue colour options, but I kept coming back to Polarised Grey and liked the colour, the fact it is a little darker but not too dark and the metallic shows up differently in different lighting conditions (from the videos I've seen). For the interior, I wanted the multifunction seats as some of the reviewers have said they are more comfortable and roomy than the sports seats. As I wanted to add the merino leather option, of the two choices, I liked the look of the black over the Adelaide grey. The Adelaide grey appears to have inserts of alcantara like material which I'm not a fan of on the seats (but it is hard to tell). So I decided on black.

The Sport Pro Package in Australia comes standard with the panoramic sunroof. Now before the iX, this most likely would have been a no go, as I've never been a big fan of the sunroof (Australia has so much light almost every day). However, I have the panoramic sunroof in the iX, and the technology BMW have embeded in this and the experience has been outstanding. I'm assuming it will be similar in the iX3 nk but just in case I've ordered a clip on internal sunroof shade accessory. Let's see. For the wheels, I have 22" in my iX and they are too firm. I think the 21" wheels look better than the 20" on the iX3 and so I opted for this size. On the design I started with the aero wheels but changed the order and moved to star spoked wheels. They look better.

Aside from the exterior colour, interior seats and colour, most of the other options on the car come standard with the package. For those interested below is the complete spec:

In terms of the look of the car below are a few external and internal shots from the 3D config viewer, the only inaccuracy is my car is RH drive:

The next item to cover is the order status. When I order I was originally quoted June/July build with September/October delivery. This was then updated to May/June build with August/September delivery. Pleasingly the requested production week is 14 April! It may be the build falls into late April, here's hoping. Below is the dealer order status showing the status code of 047, which means the order is in the system but it is yet to go through the manufacturing acceptance and scheduling process. In the queue.

In the weeks ahead my order will eventually progress to shipping. Debrecen to Sydney (Port Kembla) is from one side of the globe to the other. I'm assuming the car will be moved by rail from Debrecen to Bremerhaven and then follow one of two shipping routes. The fast route, which is the blue route in this diagram, takes around 32-37 days. The longer route, which is the red route is literally around the world and takes 42-52 days. Of course we have the Iran war underway and we are seeing diesel shortages in Australia already. If the war continues is this likely to impact global shipping, probably. Who knows really.

Looking forward to keeping you updated as my order progresses and responding to any comments or questions. I've really appreciated the early reviews from new owners, please keep them coming.
I enjoyed reading your story...thanks for sharing. I am here in the U.S. patiently waiting for the configurator to be unveiled, but your theory on why Australia is getting the iX3 first sounds plausible. I am undecided about the interior and exterior colors, panoramic roof, and wheels, so I appreciate your input.
Enjoy your car once it makes the long journey to your home, and I'll look forward to your future comments. Cheers!

Australia is not getting iX3 first - they are getting it together with the rest of the world because the rest of the world doesn't have special requirements like we do in North America that only make cars worse and require extra effort to implement.

But have you watched
Thanks. Yes I've watched a few of the RoRo videos. Amazing. And as I have done with my other cars, I will be tracking the ship. Let's hope that both of our new iX3's are not held up by either diesel shortages or congestion at Port Kembla. The RoRo vessel carrying my iX was moored for 10 days outside the Port waiting for a berth.

Thanks Mustangman's user avatarMustangman. There is a lot to consider when you are ordering from configurators and video reviews. I've not yet seen an iX3 in the flesh. If the iX3 nk has the same sunroof glass tech as the iX, it is amazing, and it gets very hot here. I did an earlier post on the internal sun shade accessory I bought for the sunroof, just in case. The sports seats in the Taycan were terribly tight on the seat, the iX went the other way and the pre-LCI model I have has the original seats which don't have quite enough side bolstering. Thomas from Autogeful did the best video compare of the two seats (videos from months ago at orginal launch) and he thought the sports seats were a bit tight and the multifunction seats would be his choice. That was enough for me.

TheUltimateDrivingManiac's user avatarTheUltimateDrivingManiac I agree Australia is getting the iX3 along with other markets. It seems as though EU/GB were the first to get to the configurator and ordering stage. I did not say Australia was getting it first, I can't recall Australia ever being the launch market for a new BMW (car). I said we were ahead of the US launch and this is the first time I can recall that happening.
That build date will slip. That is the requested build week, not the scheduled build week. Look at mine for reference:

All the other dates have been filled in. Also note mine has been at this stage (111) since November 14th.

I guess BMW in North America does not believe in electric cars in general - we don't get the iX1, for example, while we get a regular X1.

Hopefully, it will stay this way, and we will get great offers on the iX3 :D

Thanks kevinm03's user avatarkevinm03 for the reality check. I didn't think April or May would happen to be honest. Just hoping.
In March 2024 my i4 did the red route to Melbourne. It left Bremerhaven on March 26 and got to Melbourne around May 7, which is 42 days as you suggested as a minimum. But I think it could have been quicker as that was the time when the bridge in Baltimore collapsed (remember that!?) and so there was a bit of backwards and forwards as it was re-routed.

I'll be following with interest :-)
Good news, my order has moved to status 111, with confirmed production week 20/05/2026. If that happens I will be very pleased. My service advisor indicated the week of 20/05 is likely to be the first production run for Australian iX3's. That would be a first for me in terms of opening production week run for a new model order.

The expected delivery date of of 37/09/2026 is pretty interesting. That could be 07/09/2026 or 30/09/2026. If production week is 20/05/2026, lets allow a week for manufacture, two weeks to get it onto a ship, so lets say it departs port around 10/06/2026. Taking either the fast or slow route would then give an arrival range of mid to late July. Lets allow another few weeks of delay and that would mean a late August arrival at port and a plausible delivery week of 07/09/2026.

kevinm03's user avatarkevinm03 looks like our cars might be going along the manufacturing line together. NielsH's user avatarNielsH are you also 111 and in the same week?

I checked in with my sales exec on Monday. He had no information to give me at that time, but he assured me that I would be one of their first customers to receive my vehicle.

I’ll give him some space as I’m trying not to be ‘that guy’.
Hey kevinm03's user avatarkevinm03 and Ozzie8's user avatarOzzie8 can I check as to when you were both invited to configure your car and when you received your sales contract? I only configured mine on 12 March when I called them after Australian pricing was released. Things are very quiet at Canberra BMW…
NielsH's user avatarNielsH I configured mine and signed a contract on the 11th of March. So I was in the Australian order queue on the 11th.

Also for the code updates (ie 111 etc), I just asked my service advisor to send me a weekly screenshot which he is doing.

That's great news! They must have reserved production slots for AUS cars. If you placed your order in Europe at the same time, you would be looking at Q4 production!

My build week has actually improved a week since that screenshot was taken. I was told verballly so dont have an updated screenshot.
Just noticed your quoted delivery week, that's a long transit time!

I paid my deposit on November 6th, configured the car the week before.

Indeed. I suspect to your earlier point, BMW will have allocated a set of production slots to AUS and they will build a certain volume of vehicles, hold them, and then ship them on the same vessel, so that all of the AUS dealers get them around the same time, depending on the direction of the ship. So while mine might be one of the first made, it will probably make little difference in the end.

The long wait is also part of the reason I do this post. Tracking the ship to come :help:

That's not a typo - it's a weird format where they combine the week number (37) with the month (September) and year.

Same for the other dates, it might be interesting to review them.
Good one pjam73's user avatarpjam73 . Week 37 just happens to be 07/09/2026....
Progress
