I'm not sure about the formal name, but I'm referring to add-on feature that is possible to buy which gives the car the ability to drive "by itself" on highways. 1000-1300 euros if I recall.

This feature is available in some countries and will be enabled in other countries in coming months.

What I'm curious to learn:
  • On what roads does this work?
My point: Is it only "formal highways" that will work? You know, those types of roads where tractors and similar are not allowed. Or will it work on roads with clearly marked lanes with oncoming traffic. I commute daily on a road looking like this picture - will the highway feature work on roads like this?

Those of you that got your cars, and have the highway feature - can you give some input? What roads have you tested?
Of course if anyone else have additional info - pls fill in! :)

The highway assistant only work on roads with physical separation between the two sides.

It works until max speed 130kmh but if in your country the speed limit is 120 for example, it will be limited to 120, not 130.

If you don't pick the option when ordering you can try for free for 1 month and activate later

Thanks for answer! Is this something you have learned by experience, or have you got this info from BMW?

In Sweden (and also many other countries) we have what we call "two plus one" roads. That is, one lane for some km, then switching to two lanes. These roads do have a physical separator between them. I wonder if the feature will work on these.

Anyone with knowledge?

I can offer experience with a BMW iX in the US using the Driving Assistance Professional package. Hands-off assistance only works on limited access, divided highways, i.e., where there are exit and entry ramps rather than intersections. On those types of highways the coverage seems pretty thorough throughout the country, though there may be some not mapped. For all other types of highways you have to retain contact with the steering wheel.

This may be different with the iX3 or in your country, of course.

That's what is written on screen when we activate de driving assistant and need to confirm.

Can't answer if it will work on your roads, I they bmw need to map roads as highways. When the navigation is set and need to quit the highway, it asks to retake control and put the ends on the wheel even before quiting the highway.

That's dissapointing that you can only set the max limit of your country, no way to circumvent it?

Potentially with coding, but coding is not that straightforward on this vehicles.
Potentially you can remove highway limitation as well.

But I'm just guessing.

Nope.
I mean, it's okay.. if the limitation is 100 on a portion of the highway for example you can still go up to 120kmh for example..
But not over 120.. must be part of the regulations.

Otherwise, you disable the highway assistant, you keep touching the steering wheel and you can set the speed you want..

That's part of the game, we can't have all we want due to the regulations.

I tend to follow that reasoning... but then I wonder why it was never implemented for "normal" Cruise Control as well? I can set 130 on a 120 highway just fine while it is technically possible to limit me based on where I'm driving.

But indeed, must be part of the regulations that come with these kind of enhanced independent driving capabilities.
