Performance is not the only to consider though footie. Cost of development is also a major factor (among other things). I don't think there is much to argue there - developing an entire new V6, with many unique parts, even if based on the V8 is going to cost a lot more than just destroking the existing V8. My point above was, why not instead put that money into making the existing engines lighter since it will benefit the entire lineup including the upcoming M5. As I said, investigating magnesium alloy for the turbo motors would seem be a great place to sink R&D. Another good place to sink R&D is making chassis and body panels lighter.

And remember, BMW has had < 4L V8s for years. These include the 3.0L M60, the 3.5L M62, and the 3.6L N62. In fact, the N63 is the first one in four generations that only comes in one displacement. So, I don't see why they should stop the trend here.

Another thing, a Vee engine is much shorter than an in-line so this will also allow for better packaging inside the engine bay, allowing it to move futher back thus improving it's natural weight balance of the chassis and allow for less use of exotic materials to achieve the idea weight balance.

Agree. But this applies to every single BMW made so it is arbitrary to apply that logic only to the M3. BMW has been building cars with inline six and 50% weight distribution for decades.

Supercharged V8? The 7 series gets a turbocharged V8 (the N63) and this is very same engine that the S63 in the X5 and X6 M is based on.

I think that BMW will do what they have done with the N52 and N54 in recent years. They will make these turboed V-8s spread across the model line up. With exception of the 6 and 7 series you can get an N52/N54 in every BMW. It makes good $$ sense.

I doubt the M3 will get a turboed V8. The M5, yes. BMW needs to improve their CAFE numbers.

So what is the performance pecking order then for the 1/3/MSeries cars based on the information we have?

M3>3Series>1M>1Series?

Or more along the line of M3>1M>3Series>1Series?

I am set on moving from the N54 up to the next M but I'm just curious where BMW would place the 1M car in terms of its product performance portfolio.

As it stands it's m3>1>3, so I can't imagine they'd reduce 1ers performance in the next generation.

Starting with the GT 535i BMW drops the current N54 twin turbo engine and introduces a newly developed inline 6 (based on N54),
which uses a single twin-scroll turbo and Valvetronic. This is said to offer an improved engine response (and better efficiency).

What does that mean to the coming I/V 6 engine for the F3x M3? An ///M-exclusive twin turbo design?

I wonder if we'll be able to tell the difference. It makes you wonder why they didnt start out with this motor. Hopefully there will be less HPFP issues with this one.
