I've driven the 718 base. It does NOT sound like an air cooled flat 6 Porsche.

Of course I'd also have a Dino over all but a few V12 Ferraris and only one V8.
I would like an Alfa 4c but don’t think that could be a daily driver lol.

That IS a VW. Literally...

It had a flat 4 engine because the Beetle had a flat 4 engine. Doesn't make it that unique or interesting really..

Now a V4 engine as seen in Lancias? Swoooooon. They sound like a Mini-V8.

Why do people who love their brand and car to death go on forums for other brands when all they do is brag about the car they own? All I can think of is that they are insecure. They must not sleep at night knowing that someone out there has a better (or bigger) one than they do. Go back to your 718forum. Please.

This is the non BMW section. Many of us own other brands and we enjoy talking cars. I don’t think there is anything wrong with extolling the virtues of other vehicles. For example, there is a long section of “M2 vs” to help people decide if the M2 or another car is for them. I enjoy posting in bimmerpost/addicts more than the Corvette and Porsche forums as the conversation is more engaging and friendly overall and there are more diverse topics.

.this particular forum is great for gearheads...I strayed from BMW for a good 5 years but I still posted here on the regular because it is a great space to talk cars

I would never want to buy a 4 banger Porsche. I'm sure others will agree that is a total waste of money...to buy a Porsche and not get one of the best things about it; a sweet, singing 6. It's like buying a decaf coffee; triple filtered to remove the kick. A product of clever advertising and product placement.
You, sir, plainly don't know your Porsche history. It ain't all 911, and it ain't all sixes, flat or otherwise.

And, I will add, the engine is not the best reason to buy a 981/982 Porsche. It's the handling. The 718 is, by a considerable consensus among professional auto writers and others, the best-handling street car available below $200ish K ... and, some would argue, the best at any price point.

Teeone Look ay my posts/rep figures and my sig. I've been on this forum since 2014 because I owned a 2 Series and became one of the 'experts' on the car here. I traded up to a 718 a year ago, but I stick around here to provide advice and context, quell misinformation, play devil's advocate, and continue to teach and learn. It's fun. So, I didn't 'come' here. I've 'been' here.

Heck: There are forums I've been an off-and-on part of since the mid-1990s. So, Teeone : Don't tell me to go, because beyond being banned (never happened, :: knock on wood :: ), I'm likely not going anywhere. Besides: This isn't your forum. This isn't even a BMW owners forum. It's everyone's. Internet forums are a populist microcosm rendered from 1s and 0s. Obey the rules and contribute, and that's all you need: you're in.

And wasn't the 912 a flat four? A pretty popular 911 variant.

Played with a 718 non-S in my Fiesta ST and was not impressed by it. For something that costs 3 times as much as my car new and should absolutely leave me in the dust performance-wise, it had a lot of trouble doing so and wasn't very successful at it. And 3,000 lbs isn't light - my FiST stock weighs 2,780 lbs.

Nice choice in roads, 94 out to Palomar used to be my goto on my motorcycle when I lived in SD. Put the 243 on your list for your next trip, its a little further north, but an amazing road.

The Cayman is an amazing car, it does everything well. Handling is amazing, quality is top notch. I enjoy the way the 6s sound, but the 4s sound fine. I find with the frunk / trunk combo, it has plenty of space.

On the down side, by the time you add some options, it's going to be spendy when you compare what you get for how much.

Wow, that car handled incredibly! Steering was really direct and it cornered really flat. It was quicker than I thought it would be, slower than my Dinan stage 1 tuned M240i right off the line, but once the boost kicked in it produced a similar acceleration. The ride was firm, but better than the m lite in sport/sport plus on Dinan springs & bump stops.

I'm thinking a Cayman is in my future! Can't imagine how an S or GTS with more hp and performance options would drive! Here are some pics:

I did a search and found your 718 is the best sounding car of the past 4500 years. Even better sounding than a lion. Slightly beating the wild growling Turtle of the subsaharan swamps of sarimisirena.
