I spent about 90% of my time surfing... 5% walking around and chatting it up with co-workers, 2% grabbing a soda or hitting up the baño... Maybe 3% actual work.
I'd rather be busy the entire time, being bored really sucks. That's State jobs for ya |

Nah, not doing surgery - talked myself out of that, thankfully (came close, though). Doing anesthesiology, and plan on doing a pain fellowship (pain rocks!).
Work regulations - yeah, luckily our program actually follows these fairly well. Many don't, however. The general surgery program here commonly has residents in the 110-120 range. Of course they have to lie and say, 78, 75, etc. or they get ripped to shreds. Radiology/dermatology - if you're really interested in these, make sure you spend a few weeks rotating in them first. Nice lifestyle, but I got bored really fast.

I do IT contracting work, so I kinda just work when I please. Usually I end up procrastinating, but it actually gives me motivation to work. I'm a workaholic when I get in the game, though. I've worked for 14 hours straight once on projects.

Wow, a lot of you have jobs that robots will be doing soon.
I work 12-13 hours a day, and I'm lucky if I get maximum 10 minutes to eat something. Makes me jealous to know that others get paid to do nothing. But it's also more rewarding to get paid to do what I do, despite the poor conditions. |

Make sure you love the field you're going into. A nice lifestyle doesn't guarantee happiness. I considered rehab/pain for the lifestyle, but found it dull and boring during the rotation, and not worth any amount of money to me. I guess i like to incur pain rather than relieve it.

ahha...buddy, you better do more than praying. Derm has become very competitive these days because of applicants like you---students that really do not know anything about derm, but apply because they think it will be an easy residency. What you do not realize is that in the end, you have to practice as a Dermatologist. It is not enough to just do the residency, you have to actually be competent and enjoy doing the work. Making your residency selections on the basis on what you believe will require the least amount of work, is just plain stupid. You better hope I am not one that screens your application one day....because I am really tired of this type of mentality. Over the last 3-5years, we have noticed that the majority of medical schools across the country are having 10-17 students applying for a derm position...when most Derm residency programs still only take 2-5 people per year. Do the math, and continue saying your prayers.

One last word of advice for a young doc to be. when you start your internship, try to empathize with your patients, and make an honest effort to perform your house officer duties well. It isnt glamorous, but its not supposed to be. Show a willingness to learn, or a resident like myself will make you feel like a waist of space on a daily basis. good luck!

Eh for me...I work in line maintenance for an airline.
At my base, it's up to a few service checks a day which is topping off the engine oil, downloading the engine performance/flight data onto a laptop, check the tire pressures, brake wear, paperwork in the logbook. The rest is line calls which my base gets called on the cell phones or the office phone from the maintenance control in the airline's headquarters. I go out and fix them, and put them back into service. When I started working at this airline a year ago, I was doing about 9-10 service checks a day with 2 or 3 guys. Each service checks takes about 10-20 mins depending on the workload needed for each plane, more if wheel or brake has to be changed. As a few months ago, the major told my airline we have too many jets based at my base and needs to be spread out on the east coast...so now its down to 2-3 service checks a day and a few line calls. I'd say the real work is about 3 hours, the rest is browsing the net or relaxing in the office.
