At least at this time, there is no autonomous driving beyond Level 2.

  • May include ZA5 iX3M.
  • Size specs for iX3 50 xDrive (in mm):
    Length: 4780

Loving this trend of SUVs getting longer and lower to slowly convince us all that wagons are really what we need. I’m here for it. The US needs more wagons and smaller vehicles that don’t weight 7000lbs just get Starbucks and a target run for the Stanley cup crowd

From the leaked patent drawings and the concept car supposedly being 90% series design, I think it is pretty clear what to expect. I’m more looking forward to the sedan.

Eagerly awaiting what the range will be.

From https://www.caranddriver.com/bmw/ix3:

"Neue Klasse platform will use an 800-volt electrical architecture and batteries with up to 20 percent higher energy density compared to what's in production now."

I’m more excited for a weight reduction. Ie same 300 miles and 500lbs lighter.

Weight is the bane of all the EVs atm, but i am hoping every gen from now on will keep loosing weight that will give us far more range then just slapping more batteries in there that increases cost but also gives a bad feedback loop where more weight causes less range causing more batteries needed to keep range and so on and so forth.

So i hope there will be some focus on weight reduction, i wonder if we will ever see an i3 type of vehicle from BMW again where the whole car is simply carbon fibre pretty much that would be very nice to see.

I imagine that an i3 version today with the next gen batteries, drivetrain and the carbon body of the i3 would be somewhere around 450+ km of range if not even more. For the same 44 kwh batteries.

Weight reduction is a difficult topic due to the more and more demanding safety regulations for both passenger and pedestrian. EV will always be 2.2-2.5 tons.

I disagree. Weight has increased because size has increased, especially for mid and full sized cars/SUVs/trucks. On small cars, sure. But those have almost all disappeared (US/Canada).

Reportedly, the NK batteries are 20% denser and much more efficient. So it’s possible for BMW to maintain decent range (~300 mi) while simultaneously reducing weight and size.

We will soon see the details!

This is exactly why I got an EV6. It’s the look I was looking for when I needed an around town daily car. Still can’t believe I got a Kia as a life long Bimmer and Porsche guy (all manuals). I won’t ever by an automatic but an EV just hits differently and is ideal in my use case.

Thats a great car. I’ve been thinking of the ioniq5 for my next “suv” because I like the retro look over the ev6.

From what I can see this is going to look miles better than the new X3. Wonder why they chose not to design both SUV's the same, considering the new 3 and i3 will be virtually identical.

I don’t see the weight decreasing significantly unless it’s for a sports sedan (iM3 or wtv it will be called). The reality is that nearly anyone looking to buy an EV SUV is going to be far more concerned with getting more range than the marginal performance improvements from 300 lb weight reduction.

Likely then, I’d look for BMW to pack in more battery capacity into the same gravimetric footprint as before. I.e. same weight, more range.

I’ve said it a number of times recently - I believe EVs will usher in the return of the wagon. It just makes sense from an aerodynamic and weight-to-utility ratio sense. Another option we’ve seen recently is the liftback sedan. Think Model S, Polestar 2 and E Tron A6. The latter getting nearly 400 miles of EPA-rated range.

Yes, but ppl (in europe at least) want 500 mi range, so batteries weigh the same while being more energydense.

There will be sub 2t EV, but those will be rare (like the upcoming Cayman electric).
