Hey everyone,

I recently picked up a 2025 X3 M50 and I’ve noticed that the Harman Kardon system feels very front-biased, almost like the majority of the sound is coming from the dash and front doors, with not much presence from the rear.

Has anyone else with the 2025 X3 M50 experienced this? Is it normal for the HK system in this generation?

Thanks!

A member in a different thread mentioned they had taken their vehicle back to the dealer for inspection to see if something was wrong with the rear speakers. They were told the front bias is as designed and that the rear speakers will not push their full volume unless the surround effect slider is set to its maximum.

That said, I adjust the fader more to the rear. Still tinkering with Surround on/off and its slider.

So I take it that you also feel similarly that a lot of the sound comes from the dash/front doors? I have only had the car for a few days and haven't had a chance to play around with the settings much yet. Thanks!

Yes is normal. Sorry to say but HK in this car is very trashy

Yup it seems it's working as per design (BS). The rear speakers do fire better if you set the surround to max (do not recommend). Not sure if it is a placebo thing but closing the sunshade helps with the overall sound quality. Lastly, my suggestion will be that you tinker with the equaliser (bathtub graph), set the bass at 5, treble at 3 and surround to level 1.

I've noticed the front bias you've described. In tinkering with audio settings, I've ended up with the Fader control set further back than I'm used to. But other than the setting being unusual, it's just an observation, and totally a non-issue on a practical basis.

After about two months of use, I've optimized my audio settings to my taste. I know that because I no longer have the urge to tinker with the settings on every drive. With that said, I'd give the HK a solid 8 out of 10. It's definitely not the best system I've experienced (that was my 2002 Lexus Mark Levinson), but it's far from the worst. I'd describe it as solidly good.

My guess is that most who have serious complaints about the HK sound quality haven't taken the time to adequately experiment with the available settings.

No complaints for me. Personally I don't like artificial surround and the slightly front biased setup suits my hearing preference.

On my G01 I had the Logic7 dialed down to the lowest setting or totally turned it off.

Most custom installs push the sound to the front. You are supposed to feel like you're at a concert, and have a soundstage to place the instruments, singers etc in front of you.
Back speakers are fill-only to get the natural reverb.

Why would you want the sound to be biased towards the back?

Well, it's almost as if there is so much bias towards the fronts the rears might as well not exist, and there is more bass if you add a bit of rear bias to bring them up some.

Agree. Two-three clicks on the fader makes it sound more balanced. This system performs better at high volumes. With the fader set two clicks to the back, you can crank it at slightly higher volume and experience better bass.

Li forgot to order harman kardon what is the best alternative to kmprove the stock sound system ?, is adding speakers pr replaciing it expensive?

The BMW RAM cannot be replaced as it’s a multi function Receiver Audio Module that integrates a number of BMW car systems, including digital and analogue radio receivers, ASD, audio DSP, and amplification into a single module.

The usual third party options go for the lowest common access point in cars, which is intercepting the already processed and amplified analogue speaker output.

There are also possibly a automotive Ethernet to SPDIF conversion option that can extract the front and rear stereo channels from the data stream, but you need a third party amp/DSP with the appropriate number of SPDIF inputs to avoid channel summing.

Both solutions have issues, but the later avoids the lossy conversion steps, as it is digital from source to DAC.

Probably best and more cost effective to put it down to experience, and don’t forget to audio options next time.
